Blogging 101 — In Which I Learn What I Am Doing

2015-01-05 10.59.09 (2)

Hello, world!

One of my goals for this year, is to learn to be a more effective blogger. Those of you who have been around awhile know I am hit and miss at best. So, in hopes of becoming more effective, I have signed up for Blogging 101 from WordPress.

Today’s assignment is to introduce myself — so here goes. (If you’ve heard it all before, you might still learn something. 😉 )

Let’s start at the beginning. My name is Adrienne Rose. I was born in Austin, Texas over 50 years ago…boy, I’m getting old! I am the oldest of four sisters, and from the time I was a child, I have wanted to write. Now, I do, using the pen name Rie Sheridan Rose.

As a writer, connecting with people is essential. A good blog is one of the best tools for connecting that there is, and I hope to build one that is interesting and amusing to read, at least. What will you find in it? Amusing anecdotes about life, writing samples, photographs (I love to take photographs), and a potpourri of whatever else I can think of. 🙂

The goal is to publish more posts of better quality than I have too date. I am proud of what I have done, but I don’t like the irregularity of it.

I want to provide better content for more people. This is my purpose in taking this class, and I hope to reach that goal. One of the questions to answer is “If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?” I hope to increase readership; build interest in my writing; and network with other writers and bloggers in general to create a support system.

I am never good about knowing how much to share and what content–this is one of the things I need to get better at–but I will happily answer any questions you might have in the comments.

2 Down, 363 to go…

I know that I probably WON’T get a submission everyday this year, but I figured it is a good goal to have. Yesterday, I wrote a new poem for a call, and today I sent one of the orphans back out to try and find a home. It ALMOST made up for the laptop being a beast. Not quite, but almost. Thank goodness that email is cloud-based so that I can get attachments from emails I already sent, because I am not reaching the files themselves until I can figure out how to crack Windows 8.1.

Sometimes life just throws a challenge like that in your face, doesn’t it? Making it really hard to move forward. But where there’s a will, there’s usually a way.

Now, to go and write a letter from Alistair to Jo for a special guest blog post. THAT should be fun. 😉

Baby Steps…

Today was a really rotten day. First, my car wouldn’t start right after I paid the insurance and I had to call Newell to rescue me. Then, my laptop decided that the password I have been using since I set it up is no longer valid. Apparently, with Windows 8.1, the only fix for that may be reloading Windows…which came pre-loaded, of course, so I don’t HAVE a disc…

Anyway, between the two, my day was pretty destroyed. Though we did watch Guardians of the Galaxy for the second time in two days. (I think Newell liked his Christmas present.)

Still, I was determined to do SOMETHING cleaning-wise today.

So, when Marvin was small, he had a hard time jumping onto the stair rail of the computer room. Plus, he’s just really clumsy for a cat. So Newell decided to try and build him a stairway up to the railing.

It might have been a good idea when he was little, but now, he just knocked things around, and we had been talking about removing it for weeks.

So, tonight, under the watchful supervision of His Majesty:

I dismantled the whole thing and put the boxes into the recycling bin. Still needs vacuuming and a little attention with a damp cloth, but CLEANING HAPPENED! Yay!

(And I got to take pictures with the camera on my new Google Nexus 9 Tablet)

Resolving to be Resolved!

Now, I promised to keep this blog current this year, and I will. Today was spent in the relatively minor cleaning of my inbox of submissions for the anthology I am editing. It might not seem like much, but it is still cleaning that has to be done.

This is the problem I keep butting my head against–how to balance housework, writing, and editorial responsibilities. I know it can be done, but I am predisposed not to do it.

We’re going to give it one more year, as I said a couple of weeks ago, and if this blog doesn’t reflect significant changes in my housekeeping, I will give up the experiment.

I doubt I will get too much done this weekend, because my husband is still on vacation, but Monday will hopefully see a whirlwind of activity. 😉

Let It Go……

I am a terribly disorganized person. Ask anyone who knows me. But sometimes, I come up with an idea that really helps save my sanity. Not a new idea, by any means, but an idea that works.

In 2013, when I was proposed my insane 300 rejection challenge, I created a spreadsheet in Excel that helped me keep track of submissions:

My Submissions Spreadsheets – Blank Submissions (1)

If anyone thinks that will help them too, feel free to do so. Continue reading

Looking Back…Looking Forward

1-24-2009 12;03;58 PM      1-24-2009 12;03;58 PM

This has been an interesting year. I’ve had pieces in numerous anthologies–prose, poetry, flash…a little of everything. I’ve published a few experimental pieces on Amazon–both as Rie and as Tysche. I’ve been in magazines online and in print. Dabbled in everything from noir to absurdism.

Still extremely short of my goal, but 70 rejections and 21 acceptances (one came in this morning.)

I’ve tried my hand at various editing positions that I hadn’t pursued before…some worked for me, some didn’t, but I learned from them all. Editing my first anthology has been quite a ride, but I think we will all be pleased with the results. Continue reading

Putting Things in Perspective

It had been awhile since I updated the “My Work” pages. (I still don’t have a page for the individual poems or update on poetry period.)

Looking over the list of anthologies I have stories in — now up to 17 if I haven’t forgotten something, and not counting stories that have not yet been published; and the websites/magazines I have appeared in — another 15 to date…I have been pretty busy the last two years.

Next year, I should have a novel, an anthology, and a short story collection (possibly two) coming out as well. No wonder I feel tired!

I had been feeling like I was slacking. I feel much better about things now. I’m starting to believe I can call myself a writer.  😉

5 Tips to Answer Where Do You Get Your Ideas…?

If you are a writer, you have had somebody ask this question at least once. And, if you are at all prolific, you have been able to tell them…EVERYWHERE!

You never know what will strike your fancy. Keep a notebook handy and jot down every little idea–no one says you have to actually use every little idea, but what if the one you didn’t at least jot down to think about is the one that would have put you on the Best Seller’s list? You just never know. If you don’t want to carry around a physical notebook, there are plenty of apps for that. I personally love One Note, because it can sync across computer, phone, and tablet.

To get back to what to put in that notebook, here are a few sources for some of my ideas:

1) I once read something about Queen Elizabeth I on the web, and it became “Soul of a Harper” (Sung here by the marvelous Marc Gunn who also wrote the music.)

2) I read a page of The Left-Hander’s 2015 Day-to-Day Calendar (earlier year, same calendar) and wrote “We Must Have Cream for Sunday,” which has been published twice and probably will be again next year.

3) I had a dream that morphed into a main character and some of the action in a WIP.

4) I absolutely love answering submissions calls based on songs. “Married to the Sea” in Terror by Gaslight: A Fantom Enterprises – Iron Clad Press Production was inspired by Jordan Reyne’s “Johnny & the Sea” for a contest she was having. “Shadow of a Black Crow” in Come to My Window was inspired by Melissa Etheridge’s song of the same name.

5) I’ve written poetry inspired by paintings and photographs.

In other words, ideas are everywhere. Let them in. 🙂

Newly Resolved…

I was reading Show Your Work!: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered today, and one of the things that fellow Austinite Austin Kleon emphasizes is that you should keep the audience engaged with the work and show your process as you create.

I’m very bad about doing this, so I am resolving to put this blog to better use in the coming months. And tonight, I was presented with the perfect opportunity.

I was about to toss an envelope sitting on my desk, when I happened to turn it over. This was what I found:

2014-12-16 21.32.38

In case you can’t read my writing in places:

I dreamt of flowers
in the rain
the day they told me
you wouldn’t be coming
home again.

The knock at the door
almost went unanswered
because I didn’t
want Jehovah’s Witnesses
or two candy bars
for a dollar.

If I had left it alone,
pretended to be out,
would they simply
have left a note?

Or might you still
be alive somewhere?

As you can see–if you read closely–as I transcribed it from the envelope, I made changes to the punctuation, capitalization and spacing. This is my process. 🙂

And I almost tossed what I think is a pretty cool poem.

Unfortunately, that is also part of my process. I leave stuff everywhere. So, keep an eye on Here’s The Clean, too, and see if I get both sides of my house in order next year!

It’s Time to Get Resolute…

Yes, it isn’t quite January 1st, but I am going to make my first resolution today.

One last try at this blog. One last year to make a dent in the mess around here. I am very tired of it. I am not good at cleaning, but the house is driving me insane. (And I know Newell hates it even more.)

I’ve sort of got a handle on the writing at the moment. The last two years have been my best ever. Now, I need to broaden that success into other aspects of life.

The blogs are one of those. So, watch this space. It should be more active in the upcoming weeks.

Or else.
