1/4/2012 — Still Tweaking My Juggling Act…

I haven’t totally figured out how to balance my 3 hour a day cleaning commitment and getting writing done. I did figure out how much my sales taxes would be yesterday. So, that is something related to the writing business, and I’ve managed to blog on both fronts every day this week. That’s more sustained writing than I’ve done in a while, but I do have projects I need to get cracking on. But, if I give myself this week to get used to the cleaning regimen, I don’t feel too bad about it. It’s a major life change for me after all!

Oh, and for those who are also following Here’s The Clean… — I found my camera…on my desk… Hooray! 🙂

Day Four

Sometimes, you just can’t sleep. Normally, for me, that means sitting in front of my computer playing Free Cell until I wear myself out or the allergy medicine kicks in…but I realized this wee hour session that I could get some cleaning done — even if I was only sitting at my computer. I am a terrible procrastinator when it comes to email. If I don’t read it immediately, I usually just let them sit in the inbox until I get around to them. Well, a daily offer or coupon isn’t going to have any value if you don’t open it for a month usually. The weekly tips on what film to see are outdated when the next edition of the newsletter arrives. Do you REALLY need to order something from that company you used once, or can you skip it this month? I just sorted my inbox by sender and deleted 1400 unread emails that it really made no point to open. Yes, you saw that right. 1400. And I still have over 600 that made it past the initial culling. But that little bit of “cleaning” makes me feel far better than playing a dozen games of Free Cell would have…and I think the meds may have kicked in enough to let me go try sleeping again. In any case, it made me feel virtuous. 🙂 Do you have a similar chore you can take care of today?

UPDATE ONE: Getting a very late start today, but excited to get stuff done. First roll of the day, 30 minutes downstairs in the hallway/stairs area. That may not sound difficult, and it isn’t, but you haven’t seen the hallway. You will. 😉

UPDATE TWO: Well, I tricked myself that time! When I set my alarm for 30 minutes, I forgot to change it from PM to AM, so I worked another 15 minutes before I started wondering if there was a problem…lol. But I think I made a dent.  You decide:

Hall before the session.

Hall after the session. Not finished, but better.

Next roll of the day…is 2 hours in the pantry. I’m calling a tweak of the system. This is the fourth time in four days I have rolled the pantry. There are way too many areas that haven’t been touched yet. Again, I’ll keep the duration, but I need to re-roll the location. Have to keep some balance in getting things started. If one room is COMPLETELY done before all the others, that will throw things off. So, here we go with the re-roll: the Computer room. We really need a lot of work here, so I’m happy.

UPDATE THREE: It’s very hard to tell what was done in that two hours…but you should have seen the pile of mail opened, sorted and first pass filed. I need to get some file folders to get them totally organized, but it was a step forward. And I ALMOST cleared the Ping Pong table, which has been a dream of Newell’s for years now.

Computer room before starting the session.

Computer room after the session. Yeah…you can hardly see a difference, but TRUST me. I can tell the difference. 😉

UPDATE FOUR: Rolled 30 minutes outside in the front yard. Nice end to the day. There should be enough work to do for that length of time. And I can get back to my Audible book instead of having Top Chef Masters on in the background…

UPDATE FIVE: One of the things I have really wanted to take care of in the front yard is this weird growth on my porch rail:

(My pictures will get better when I unearth my camera in due course…at least my phone has a camera again!)

I don’t know exactly what the fungus is, or how to completely get rid of it. After 409 and a scrub brush, as well as another cleanser [Newell got it before we were married from Amway, and it doesn’t have a name on the bottle] and paper towels, this is what the rail looks like:

As you can see, there are still remnants of the fungus on the paint. I expect they will probably regrow. Does any one have any ideas on how to completely eradicate the fungus? Or a tip where to look for the answer? Remember — this is supposed to be an interactive thing. 😉

DAILY WRAP UP:  30 (45) minutes in Front Hallway + 2 hours in Computer Room + 30 minutes Front Yard = 3 hours (and 15 minutes.)

1/3/2012 — Hmmmm…

I passed two young women talking today, and overheard one say to the other “I can’t find any I haven’t read.” Immediately, I wanted to stop them and say “What genre are you looking for? What authors do you like? Might I make a few suggestions?”

Looking back on it, I probably should have. I couldn’t think of any reason someone might not find something to read that they would like. Of course, Newell pointed out that he couldn’t find any Robert Heinlein books that he hadn’t read, because he had reached the end of a limited resource. I suppose, if they were discussing something along those lines, the statement might have been true.

On the other hand, there are so many authors writing so many books these days — I have over a thousand in my Kindle alone — that no one should be stuck for something close to what they are looking for, even if the specific author they love is no longer producing. I bet there is someone “Heinleinesque” out there for instance… Anyone got any suggestions?

Day Three

Sometimes, life steps on your plans. Then you have to be flexible. I have a dentist appointment this afternoon, and we have one car. So…I can’t start my three hours until late today. Does this mean I can’t get anything done? No. I just have to adapt. Sitting in a laundromat doing a load of clothes — so that is one thing I don’t have to worry about when I get home (and having a dryer available means Newell’s work clothes will be more to his liking anyway.)

One of my big problems I need to deal with are nasty stains on the toilets. I’m not even sure why they are so bad. But, I was researching the problem last night here (as well as other places) and they all mentioned using a pumice stick to get rid of the tough stuff. So I popped into Home Depot today and got one. Another errand related to the clean even if not directly DOING it. And a time saver next time I roll a bathroom.

So, if you decide to start a regimen of your own, and circumstances conspire to keep you away from the house, see if there are related errands you can do that need to be done anyway and will save you time on your cleaning agenda. 🙂

UPDATE ONE: Here’s another example of needing to be flexible. Just got home at 5:30 in January and rolled 1 hour 15 minutes outside in the front yard. While there might be that much work if I look hard, there isn’t going to be that much SUNLIGHT left today. So, I am calling my first “do-over”…because sometimes it’s all you can do… I’ll keep the duration, but I have to change the location for practicality’s sake.

Re-roll gives me 1 hour 15 minutes in the “Studio” (i.e. known as the Artsy Junk room) which hasn’t been touched so far. That’s much better.

UPDATE TWO: My dice hate me. 😦  For the third time in three days I get the pantry…but there is no real reason to skip it this time. Off I go for another hour and a half in there. But the way my back feels, we will cheat on that other 15 minutes…I did go to Home Depot after all.

UPDATE THREE: I’m a bad cleaner. 😦 Had to quit in the pantry 45 minutes early, because my back wasn’t having any more of it. Getting older sucks. And laundry always puts it screaming. Off to a hot bath and hopefully better luck tomorrow.

DAILY WRAP UP:  1 hour 15 in “Studio” + 45 minutes in Pantry = 2 hours. BAD ADRIENNE!

Day Two

Got a late start today as my husband surprised me by actually WANTING to get out of the house to go get lunch. But came home to my first chore of the day…1 hour 15 minutes in the back yard.

Newell wasn’t sure there was enough to do to fill that much time, but I found stuff. Filled the bird feeders — which I am hit or miss about doing, but it is so much fun to watch the birds. You can tell they really appreciate it. Especially this time of year.

Then I picked up some disintegrating plastic items in what was once to have been (and may one day be again) a flower bed. So much fun as the brittle plastic snaps beneath your fingers into ever smaller pieces to mock your efforts.

But the majority of my time, and the greatest satisfaction came from pruning some of the dead wood out of the old-fashioned rose bush. Hoping it will revitalize it a bit. There are a few hips on it at the moment. I know that you can make rose hip tea, but I don’t know the particulars. So…I Googled it, and got quite a list of sites with recipes and tips. This one looked particularly useful to me.  Guess I should go back out and pick those.

Here is the bush in all its blooming glory:

Old-Fashioned roses in bloom

I’m hoping that getting the dead wood out will encourage even more blooms. 🙂

On to task two now:

Back to the pantry for the next two hours. At least that will fulfill my three hours today. And I do have some organizational ideas. There’s this nice bit of peg board begging to be useful…

UPDATE ONE: I may have to rethink my durations a bit…2 hours was a bit much, but the pantry is really coming into shape — though the floor is a disaster, and getting everything up off it so I can mop won’t be trivial. Couldn’t hang my peg board because I don’t have the right nails, but I can write that down on the white board I hung for grocery notes. [By the way, if you haven’t seen this site, I highly recommend it for great printable grocery lists. Can be a lifesaver at the grocery store and keep you on track.]

DAILY WRAP UP: 1 hour 15 minutes Back yard + 2 hours pantry. Two tasks today, but still meet the 3 hour minimum with 15 minutes to spare!

See ya tomorrow.

1/2/2012 Taking Care of Business

It’s always hard for me to knuckle down to the practical side of the writing business. The writing itself, I can feel fairly confident about, but the nuts and bolts business end is a trial for me.

These are the resolutions I’ve made in this area this year:

1. Clear the decks on all short pieces. If they haven’t sold by now, they aren’t going out again. This may seem counter-productive to many, but I like the idea of a clean slate. And that isn’t to say that they may not be put up on the website or offered as self-pubbed pieces in the future — it just means that they aren’t going out again now. I can think of one or two exceptions to that rule, but those are special cases and not currently in play.

2. I want to try and send out at least one NEW piece a week this year. (Of course, this means I have to actually WRITE something, so less time playing on Facebook or carousing in Skyrim…)

3. I hope to do more lyric writing this year. I really enjoyed writing the songs for Don’t Go Drinking With Hobbits, and I am very proud of the results. I would like to do more along those lines…so if you write music, and want lyrics, drop me a line!

Those are already ambitious goals…and with the cleaning too…it’s going to be a busy year! 🙂

We’re Off You Know…

In an attempt to both build my blogging skills and get my house clean, I decided to create a daily diary of the trials and tribulations of taking a three bedroom, four cat house from trainwreck to triumph. You get to ride along if you so chose.

First off, let me say that I hate housework with a passion that cannot be described…but I just had my first hour-long session on my new regimen, and it was sort of fun.

Several things conspired to make it so:

  • Being finally fed up with the sheer mess of it…
  • Having a new (and rather literal) gameplan for getting it done.
  • A good book from Audible to pass the time.

My new “gameplan” is this:

I made a chart of the big areas in the house — upstairs; downstairs; garage/pantry; and outside. (4)

Then I made a chart of the smaller pieces of each of those areas — Computer room, bedroom, study, studio, “junk room”, master bath, guest bath, “hall” area (upstairs, 8); Kitchen, dining room, hallway/stairs, bathroom, library, living room (downstairs, 6); back, front (outside, 4); garage, pantry (4)

Finally, I made a chart of durations, in fifteen minute intervals from 15 minutes to 2 hours. (8)

Then I dug out my old D&D dice and rolled up my first chore of the year.

It turned out to be a 2 on a four-sided die (or garage/pantry session). Rolling a four-sided again, with odds being the garage and evens being the pantry, I was directed to the pantry, and rolled an eight-sided to find out I’d be spending an hour there.

I set the alarm on my phone, turned on Stephen King’s 11/22/63 and went to work. Seemed like no time till the alarm went off, and I got a nice chunk of shelves organized.

My goal is a minimum of 3 hours worth of cleaning a day. Chores like dishes, laundry and shopping don’t figure into the list — those will still be done when needed.

I hope to use this blog to comment on tips I figure out along the way; products that work — and don’t; and to seek advice from more experienced housewives when needed!

I hope you come along for the journey — and feel free to post suggestions, encouragement, or questions in the comments.

Let’s clean!

Adrienne

UPDATE ONE: My second roll was 45 minutes in the Master Bath. Had Newell look when I was done and he said it looked like much more than 45 minutes worth of work. That’s all the encouragement I need for roll three!

UPDATE TWO: My final roll of the day was not quite so lucky, because it turned out to be an hour and a half in the guest bath upstairs. After one bathroom session today, I wasn’t looking forward to it…but I soldiered on even though Newell said I could reroll. Had to give up and admit I wasn’t going to QUITE get there about ten minutes early when my back was screaming at me from the unaccustomed exercise. But, the bathroom is in much better shape, and I never said I’d finish a room in one session.

DAILY WRAP: 1 hour pantry + 45 minutes Master Bath + 1 hour 15 minutes Guest Bath = 3 hours cleaning. Not a bad first day.

1/1/2012 Where Did the Time Go?

I’m a tad embarrassed that my last post was Halloween. I really have no excuses. Oh, I’ve been busy, but not THAT busy. I’ve just been a bit lazy. We’re going to be working on that. I vow to be a better blogger…but it may take me a while to get into a good groove as to what that is. I know many friends have certain days of the week set apart for specific categories of post, and I may explore that route this year. I’m sure it helps organize things, which is something I always need.

I also have started a second blog on a totally different wavelength hoping that it will help keep me honest. If you are interested, Here’s the Clean... will follow my daily trials at trying to get a handle on housework. Hopefully, it will be a bit of fun to read…we’ll see.

I’m going back to reading Elisabeth Sladen: The Autobiography
now. If you are/were a fan of Sarah Jane Smith, you should be reading it too. It is like a long lovely chat with Lis about her varied and vibrant career. HIGHLY recommended.

10/31/11 — Happy Halloween!

Ah, Halloween…my favorite holiday of the year. I love the costumes, the candy, and the horror stories. Curling up in a dark room with Freddie Kruger on the tube, or snuggling under the covers with Edgar Allen Poe, what could be finer?

The best scares, of course, are those that impact you personally. The unexplained shadow in the corner of the room when you are sleeping over at a friend’s house. The creaking attic overhead on a Girl Scout camp out. These are some of my scary memories.

What are your favorite real life ghost stories? I remember the night that I saw the witch standing outside my bedroom window when I was about 10. She just stood there, staring in at me. I am sure I was awake…though no one else is. You see, the witch in question was sitting in the front window of the living room — and there was no question of her getting up and standing there instead…she was constructed of paper mache,  and had a previous incarnation as a mermaid. She didn’t even have any legs. To this day, I am still convinced she was really there.

Have you had a similar unexplained event in your life? Pull up a virtual camp stool to the fire circle here and share your ghost stories. It’s Halloween!

10/29/11 Daisy Comments on Writing a Drinking Song

A couple of days ago, my good friend Daisy Brambleburr posted this on her new DAISY’S DIARY page. As people aren’t used to checking that yet, and as I thought she had some really good advice, I am reposting it here for everyone to see:

10/27/11 — I’ve been chatting with my friend Rie about writing a drinking song. What things you want to include, how to make it catchy, things like that. We’ve come to agreement on a few points we would like to share, because “Everybody Needs a Drinking Song” (available on Don’t Go Drinking with Hobbits) all their own.

When asked what goes into writing a successful song, Steven Brust cited this list of criteria from Adam Stemple, and it seems like a good list to hold in mind: Humour, suspense, originality, or internal rhymes — a song needs at least one of these to be successful. (Well, someone will probably find an exception to that rule — but you know what they say about exceptions…)

Taking those requirements as a given, what else do you need to make a good drinking song specifically?

The first thing that you must have is a talented partner like Marc Gunn if you are musically inept and can only write lyrics. This is something that Rie made me promise to stress.

Secondly, you need a strong chorus, especially if you want the audience to be able to sing along. It is easier to teach a crowd the few lines of a chorus rather than the whole song at once. They will be happy to participate if you make it catchy and memorable. For example, check out the chorus in “We’ll Have a Pint of Stout”.

You’ll notice that this song also has internal rhyme and a bit of humor — so it fits Stemple’s list as well!

Finally, to be a great drinking song, some mention of liquor seems appropriate. You can’t have a good love song without mentioning love, can you? It’s the same with drinking songs — the best have a pint or two. Look at these examples: “Do You Fancy a Drink?”;“Everybody Needs a Drinking Song”“Let’s Get Drunk Tonite”

Give it a try! Writing about drinking is fun — even if you don’t drink yourself. And be sure to let me know what you come up with!
