3/7/12

So, today I intended to get some errands run…but we got such a late start, I wound up just goofing off all day and taking pictures. It was very restful and reviving, and I wanted to share some of the shots I took. I might make this a weekly thing. The rest between makes the work less tedious…

Anyway, these are my favorite shots of the day:

Now, I feel all relaxed, and probably will do a little moving around of stuff before Psych. If it is enough to count, I’ll update.

3/6/12

Getting a late start today, though I have washed a bunch of dishes. I’ve been slacking off — playing with my photographs over on Flickr. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed that.

So, let’s get down to business. Going back to the die today. Library.

Three hours in the library will hopefully be very useful. We are at odds about what to do for bookcases on that newly cleared wall. I think I have a plan on where to start today, and the sooner I get started, the sooner I can get back to Flickr. 😉

UPDATE ONE: So things were going along swimmingly in the library. I had decided to focus on this area today:

Yikes, I know.

I was actually getting a lot of sorting done, some trash immediately tossed, some collectibles uncovered which may or may not stay a part of my collections…

And then disaster struck —

Psycho Kitty wanted to help. She was nosing around and jumped onto the windowsill and I hear a loud crash!

It isn’t as if the poor fellow hadn’t had bits snapped off before. He’s been missing the tip of his hat and the top and bottom of his staff/wand for years…but this is the biggest destruction yet. I immediately broke into gut-wrenching sobs…not sure why, except I’ve carried him around from place to place since I was in high school, lo so MANY years ago.

I picked up all the shards, and I think I can maybe glue the big pieces back together…but the heart went out of my cleaning for today. I will try to do the other hour and a half later today, but I make no guarantees.

At least I made some progress:

UPDATE TWO: Still haven’t gotten anything more done, but I read a great post over on Russell’s 365 Trinkets, and I am beginning to wonder if I am too attached to the old fellow…maybe I shouldn’t bother trying to fix him, but just be glad for the time we’ve had together and consign him to the Big Junk Room in the Sky. What do you guys think? (Realize that the consensus is non-binding, and I may do the opposite no matter what you say…) 😉

UPDATE THREE: Aside from doing some more dishes, I didn’t ever get back to the housework today… I did get some editing work done, but I feel a bit guilty about the cleaning. I was just restless and out of sorts for the rest of the day after the accident with the wizard. And tomorrow is shaping up for errands, so may not get much done then either… Ah, well. It is still better than where I started this year. And we may have a lead on some bookcases…

3/5/12

Another week. I am feeling very good about life today. A load in the washer already…about to put it in the dryer.

Next up, I’m working in the Office today. Really need to get a handle of that space. I tried to work at the “computer desk” in there last night, and having to bend over the desk killed my back. I need a new solution. Getting space to work in there would facilitate replacing it.

I’ve been easing back into participation on Flickr this weekend. Feels good. I’ve neglected my photography for awhile now. Even when I’ve taken pictures, they haven’t gotten shared, and that is rather silly. I was very pleased to win my first challenge since I started up again yesterday. I really like this shot:

It was taken last March at my niece’s birthday party.

But that is beside the point. Let’s get to work!

UPDATE ONE: Not sure if it was exactly three hours or not, but it was as long as I could take today…lol.

It is frustrating and disheartening to work in the Office, because it is SUCH a mess. But I think there was a little progress today.

Here is what I started with today:

Absolutely hopeless…everything I’d done before full of stuff again…

But there is a ray of hope in the progress:

Raised the computer a bit…got a bit of floor excavated…cleaned up the stock cabinet again.

Eventually, the floor will stay clear, the cabinet will stay sorted, and everything will have a place. But I still need to figure out more storage before that day fully realizes. Like I desperately need to figure out what to do with my hats…

DAILY WRAP UP: I am calling it three hours in the Office. Good day’s work, even if there is a lot more to go. Playing with my photos for the rest of the day. 🙂

I’m Back…Back in the Saddle Again…

I think this week went exceedingly well. I feel like I got re-energized and got a lot more work done again. Even if it was mostly things that no one else might see.

And today I relaxed with my wonderful husband, watched The Sure Thing — which I had never seen, despite being a HUGE John Cusack fan. (My favorite of his films has to be Grosse Pointe Blank for a thousand different reasons…)

Then we went to lunch at El Arroyo for a fabulous lunch and topped it off with Amy’s Ice Cream. Just the sort of revitalization day I needed.

Makes me keenly excited to get back to work in the morning. But I am out of bricks for bookshelves and we are undecided on what to do about it. May have to concentrate on somewhere else until we decide if we are doing something different on the newly cleared wall.

Whatever we decide…the urge to clean is back. At least at the moment, and I hope to take full advantage of it!

3/3/12

I promised you some more pictures on the wonderful and varied uses of PhlexGlu today.

As I say, the great thing about it was its versatility. You could use it as a scenic material, or to make props, detail costumes, almost anything. If I can find some pictures later, I’ll share. Most of the theatrical uses we put it to I can’t at the moment find photos of. But I do have a few shots of some of the things I personally used it for, and I think you will get the gist. 🙂

When Newell and I got married, we celebrated by going to the now defunct Excalibur Faire. I made us costumes as a Wicked Sorceress and her Demon. Here is a shot of the back of Newell’s vest:

It was intended to look like a flayed face. It didn’t have as much detail as I would have liked, but I thought it came out fairly well.

Some years before that, after going down to the Texas Renaissance Festival and seeing the lovely fairies, I came home and decided to make some wings. So I could go back to the faire two weekends later. This was the result. I worked day and night on these things to get them done in time:

Here are the full wings…they are at least 15 years old now.  A detail of one of the vanes.

I so wanted to make another set, but the spiderwebs they were built on disappeared from the hobby store after Halloween, and I have never found anything similar enough to work.

Every now and then, if I want to wear them, I have to patch a little hole, but they have held up surprisingly well for being tissue paper and Phlex Glu. 🙂

Finally, going back even FURTHER…when I was teaching in Brownsville twenty years ago, I did a production of The Ugly Duckling and needed a “Record book”. So I created this from an old book called On This Day so if anyone did happen to catch a glimpse of the interior, it would be appropriate for the context:

It’s gotten a little beat up over the years, but it is still in great shape for being twenty years old.

As you can see, Phlex Glu really allowed you to be extremely creative. Today I will check out the FlexBond and see if it performs anywhere near as well. Wish me luck!

UPDATE ONE: So, here are my thoughts so far…

Diluted, not so good. Full strength, works better.

The first application I tried didn’t work at all. Don’t know if it was the diluted glue, the framework, the conception, or what, but the project was a disaster:

The tissue wouldn’t lie flat, didn’t stick well. Need to rethink this project. I have a couple of options.

Using undiluted glue in a more decoupage technique worked better. I did discover that it doesn’t dry as clear as I would like. I had purposefully “painted” beyond the picture to see, and it came out a little milky around the edges. Of course, it hasn’t had time to completely cure, so that may change…but I doubt it.

Wrinkles in the paper are my fault because I wasn’t trying to be perfect, just see if it would work at all.

Finally, I see that the undiluted glue can be tinted with paint and it seems to work okay. Will probably go back in and retouch the area with a bit of dry-brushing to tone the gray, but it looks all right in context. Stuck to the hot melt glue fairly well.

First tree I have done in years. It’s bigger than any of the others, but I think I like it. I’m calling it “Windswept”.

Clean up seems to be the same, hot water and a bit of soap. All in all, I am cautiously optimistic that the product will be similar enough to the original to be useful.

Along the way, I found out that my shiny, new, HEAVY desk was covering the only outlet on that wall, so I had to move it out a few inches to plug stuff in. Made one of the things I plugged in a powerstrip, and the other a glue gun cradle with a built in outlet, then pushed the desk back as close to the wall as it would go.

3/2/12

Late post, I know, but I got right to work when I got home. On the way back from the office building where Newell works, I thought of an alternative to stealing Firefly’s table.

There was a desk in the library that needed to go somewhere anyway. Now it is ensconced in the Studio to be an art table. This necessitated quite a bit of rearranging. I filled in all my lovely floor space in the library shifting things, but I think it will be worth it in the long run, because now I have another run of wall where I can set up more shelves.

I also had to rearrange the Studio a bit to clear the space for the desk. So that room will need some help too. But I have drawers to help store things in, so I think it will be a win-win in the long run.

PLUS, I may have come up with a niche that I can fill on Etsy. Haven’t had time to check yet, but I am very excited by the prospect.

So, all in all, a good day. Definitely three hours of work went into this project.

Here are the pictures:

Desk in Library when I started…see the drawer?   But I finally cleared it.

All the stuff from that side shifted over…              But I have a new hole in the Library!

And a nice sized work surface in the Studio — as long as I keep it cleared!

I feel like that was a productive day. Especially since, along the way, we found that the new vacuum wasn’t performing up to snuff anymore and the “bag” wasn’t filling because the hose was clogged solid…

Tomorrow I will share those other examples of what PhlexGlu could do I told you about, and see if the FlexBond is anywhere near as good.

For now, I’ve earned me some more Matthew Shardlake.

DAILY WRAP UP: Calling it 2 1/2 hours in the Library and 30 minutes in the Studio. I think that is close enough.

3/1/12

So, I did it — new title style. I think I will keep up with it better. I know, they say a catchy title will draw in more readers…but I have trouble thinking up the Sunday titles. EVERYDAY?! No, no, I don’t think so…

My FlexBond is supposed to get here today. I can hardly wait! I am so looking forward to testing it out. If it is anything like the old PhlexGlu, we are going to be happy campers indeed! Saturday I will show you a few more things it could do…

But now, I am going to watch my delayed Top Chef finale, and then go do three hours…where, Oh Mighty Die?

In the Studio. Perfect! I can get it ready to craft in again. 🙂

UPDATE ONE: Despite a break for lunch, I only made it two hours in there. 😦

There comes a point where I find myself just looking at stuff and going…”What next?” If I try to push past that point, I rarely achieve anything further. Better to stop for the day.

I still need to clean up the files in the middle of the living room floor from last night, so that will probably be my final hour today.

Here is today’s most visible progress:

Threw away a big bag of trash, carried down an armful of books, and found storage places for a bunch of stuff. Still a lot to go, but it is getting better.

I want to be able to set up a worktable in there, but I will have to fight Firefly for it, because Newell has set her up a princess palace on it in the bedroom 😛

Time to hit those file folders again.

UPDATE TWO: Threw away a lot more paper. Can probably winnow it further by scanning in some of the stuff. There were a few cool things in the files. Like my copy of I’m Not Spock which has been stuck in a plastic bag in a drawer for decades….

Got all the drawers in the cabinet and the files moved upstairs, thus reclaiming my living room floor. That was a solid hour of sorting.

Will go through them one last time as I determine how to file them back into the cabinet. I may decide there is further weeding that can be done.

DAILY WRAP UP: 2 hours in the Studio + 1 hour in the Living Room = 3 hours.

Tomorrow I have some errands to run, so I may be out of the house most of the day again. Even so, I’ve been more productive this week than I have been in a while…

Day 60 (Month 2-29)

Last day of the month…again. Well, this month we didn’t do as well as we did in January, but progress is still being made. Just more slowly.

Hoping to amend that somewhat today.

As I said yesterday, I am going to take a week or two here and concentrate on the worst areas left to deal with.

1 = Office

2 = Studio

3 = Library

4 = Junk Room

and the winner is…

The Library! Great place to spend some rainy time. I could also roll duration, but I think I will try for just doing the three hours straight in whatever room I roll for the day. Especially since Newell is not feeling well and asleep in the bedroom. (Think he may have gotten a non-veggie eggroll at lunch yesterday and it is not agreeing with him.)

Let’s see what three hours dedicated time in the Library can do.

UPDATE ONE: I made it two hours…and it is almost impossible to do anything in there because there is no floor space to sort, or area for new shelves or anything. I did manage to get one of the file cabinets out into the Front Hall, and if I can get help later getting it upstairs to its new home in the Computer Room, that will be a big step forward. Sorting through the files in the drawers could easily fill that last hour I need for the day. I haven’t taught in almost twenty years and still have papers relating to teaching… Good things to get rid of!

I also culled another box of books that there are either extra copies of or I have in my Kindle and don’t really need both.

Pictures:

All my shelves are over-full and double-stacked. But I am at a loss until I can put up more shelves. Ah, the tragedy…

The bookcase in the corner is more reference stuff that should be in the Office. I got it consolidated a bit so I could see what was there.

Fixed some of the double-stacking…and created a nice hole of floor…

Here’s the box of books to get rid of:

I think I may take a nap!

UPDATE TWO: Did at least another hour of sorting through the contents of the file folders that had been in the file cabinet and tossing stuff. Filled about a half sack of trash. Got the cabinet moved into place upstairs. Still a mess on the living room floor, but I’ll get that squared away tomorrow.

Dishes done while watching the Psych season premiere — I gave up the Top Chef finale for Shawn and Gus! But I’ll watch it tomorrow.

All in all, a good day.

DAILY UPDATE: Calling it three hours in the library, since that is where the files came from.

Day 59 (Month 2 – 28)

Newell needed me to go with him this morning — as sometimes happens if he slept badly. It means I got a great lunch and a nice dinner, but nothing done.

I did come to a conclusion though. Some areas of the house are in fairly good shape; the kitchen, the dining room, the living room (most of downstairs), the Guest bath…

and some are still junk pits; the library, the Studio, the Office, the Junk Room…

I think for at least the rest of this week, and probably next, I am going to revise my game list and roll my four-sided dice for one of those four rooms. Concentrating on the bad areas may help tame them more quickly.

If I get a handle on those, then I can go back to the normal routine and pick up the rough spots some of the other rooms still have.

I have a goal that I would like to be done and have a Fourth of July party…but I haven’t run that plan by Newell yet. It is still the goal. 🙂

I feel like curling up in bed with my Kindle for a few minutes and going straight to sleep early tonight. But I will see if I can get a bit done in the Office first. If I do, I’ll update. But I wouldn’t count on it.

Day 58 (Month 2 – 27)

Okay. We are going to get back to work today. No more horsing around because the house looks better. It still isn’t done, and I’ve been slacking. That isn’t going to get it finished, is it?

Going to follow the dice today. No matter what they say.

The first roll of the day is 1 1/2 in the “Junk Room” area. I still don’t know what that space is intended to be. A sitting room or study, I think Newell said. I want to clear most of it out and maybe get an exercise bike or treadmill…but that is a long way in the future. First I have to go through all those 10 year old boxes and figure out what needs saving in them.

My shredder is already plugged in, so I can make decisions and not renege on them. I know there is a lot of paper in those boxes. 😉

And there is no TV anywhere close to that “room”, so I can concentrate better.

UPDATE ONE: Satisfying bit of progress, even if it did little to the naked eye. Threw away three bags of trash and a box of little junk. And put most of the boxes I’d been saving into the recycle bin. Better to get new clean ones if I ever need them anyway.

Before I post the pictures of the room, Liz asked to see my dice. Here is a better shot of the current set than I posted when I bought them:

The yellow one is to pick Upstairs area; middle is to pick initial area and for front/back yard or pantry/garage; green is to pick Downstairs area and time limit

Now, as for the Junk Room:

Before  — lots of boxes…                                        After — you can SEE that bookcase now…

Here’s a better shot of what I actually did today. I emptied several boxes that were under that window. And a laundry hamper full of junk. (Look THERE’S the title to my truck…)

As I was sitting down to do this update, I saw in my email the announcement of this great post on keeping the calendar over on Liz’s blog. As I commented over there, it was a really fortuitous timing, because as I was sorting through the Junk Room I found calendars from 1995 and 1996 that I started to toss until I looked at some of the entries and realized that I had marked down some very important occurrences in my life and set them back for further review.

On the other hand, I think I found THREE of those purse-size organizers, all in various states of decay. What is our fascination with calendars? I don’t know how many I buy and NEVER write in…and those little organizers never help me get that way.

I do need to keep a calendar though. My memory is so flaky these days, if I don’t write it down SOMEWHERE, I am sure to lose it…lol.

My next roll is an hour outside in the front yard. Well, I do want to actually do some yard work this year, and it isn’t too cold today. Normally, I re-roll outside lately, but I think I’ll go for it this time.

UPDATE TWO: Only did 30 minutes outside, but that was because I accomplished what I set out to do, and couldn’t think of anything else to do today!

I originally was thinking of planting some bluebonnet seeds I have, but when I checked to see when the optimal time was here, I found out they should be planted in October so they can gestate through the winter.

Then I thought I would see if my neighbor was home so I could get some seeds she offered me, but she was out.

So, the only thing I could really do today was finish transplanting my sage from the middle of the yard to around the porch. I still can’t really tell if the original plants are growing, but they at least don’t look dead. I transferred three of a slightly different variety to the porch, and put two in the corner of the fence. Hopefully, they will grow nice and big.

Phone pictures, so not as good as the camera, but I didn’t want to come inside and get it:

Notice Kindle is NOT on the top rail….                   I guess I could have pulled those weeds….

Still, 30 minutes of planting is not bad.

We are up to 2 hours. Next roll:

Downstairs in the Kitchen for an hour. That will finish my time for today. PRODUCTIVELY  for a change! Three actual hours again.

UPDATE THREE: I washed the remainder of the dishes that had been hanging out on the counter. All caught up on those except for the hummingbird feeder, and I need a special brush to get down into it.

I also went through the pots cabinet and purged a few more for the next TPV pickup. Went through the spices cabinet and threw out a few old or nearly empty things. Consolidated a couple more, and pulled the unopened things and put them back in the pantry.

I tried to sort out the misc. gadget drawer, but it didn’t look much different when I finished. 😉

That was a satisfying day of work. 🙂

Makes me feel like I’ve actually been productive again.

Counter done!

Still full of pots, but I got rid of two colanders, a measuring cup, and a couple of saucepans.

Okay, maybe the kitchen has gotten to the re-roll stage. I’m starting to get silly picky when there are still much less finished rooms to do.
