Color my face red again…

I totally spaced yesterday on posting until it was too late. I blame it on taking my sister to the Alamo Drafthouse to  see a movie. Why, what movie was that, Rie? You might well ask…and can probably guess…*cough* Rock of Ages *cough*

But I swear it is the last time until the DvD comes out. It was fun to see the original videos to some of the songs though. Alamo always tries to have a themed intro to the movie. Boy, everybody looked like babies…

Today I took Newell in again and went up to Georgetown for lunch with my parents and another fitting for the Jacket From Hell. I really didn’t know it would be this kind of trouble when I asked my Mom if she could make it for me…but it is finally coming together and I think it will be ready for the convention I really want it for, OctopodiCon in Oklahoma City in October. It will be my first Steampunk Con, and I am really looking forward to it. Though I have to check again, because I was supposed to show up on the website by now…

Still no cleaning this week, but I got the contract off for another story…

Here’s the cover:

Be sure to check it out on the Mocha Memoirs site. It goes live for my birthday next Wednesday.

Summertime…and the Livin’ is Easy…

Not a big post tonight. It’s been a lazy day again. Sat out on the front porch for awhile reading with my husband. 🙂

Watched a lot of NCIS today.

My erotic story kicked off the Mocha Memoirs Anniversary Celebration today.  (If you want to check it out, it is Rainy Day Frolics. Remember — erotic story; it is rated R for sexual conduct. If that doesn’t scare you off, order from the link on that page. My royalties are better. 😉 ) Come and join the Mocha Memoirs Cafe to chat with authors and get the latest news. Or follow the blog to enter for prizes.

I’ll have another non-erotic story up later in the month if you aren’t a fan of the sexy. That will make two for me and two for Tysche with Mocha Memoirs.

Tomorrow I will be visiting my sister for most of the day. But I need to do it.

I will get back to you. It’s the end of the day.

Spent today goofing off with my husband. Except I did go to the grocery store. Actually, two, because I went to check out the new Whole Foods first, before heading to HEB for the more mundane items.

Whole Foods is kinda scary…but I did get some produce there. It’s a bit overwhelming, but I can see why they use it to shop for Top Chef. It’s all organic and upscale.

Came home, put groceries away and vegged in front of the Law and Order SVU marathon for the rest of the day, playing games on my less than stellar game computer. It’s been acting up a LOT lately.

Also took out a few minutes to go over the revisions for a story. The editor had like two suggestions. Love edits like that! Sent it back, and it will be up in a couple of weeks. 🙂

Resting up this weekend to get down to business and get downstairs back in shape next week. I WILL BE CLEANING!

Well, color me embarrassed…did I really forget to post yesterday? That was a total oversight. You see, I DID post my RieView of Rock of Ages on the RieWriter site…and I thought that I had posted that info here, but I guess it was only on Facebook that I linked it.

It’s been that kind of week…

We took the car to Firestone yesterday, and they wouldn’t touch it. Said it was an engine problem and they didn’t do engine work. They recommended a place that would look at it, but it was too late to go over there, so we limped the car home.

Today, we were getting ready to go over to their recommended place, and Newell started talking to Fernando across the street, who recommended he take it to Lopez. Well, you KNOW how much I like Lopez. We dropped it off there, and they had it fixed by the end of the day. Turns out it wasn’t the engine (Thank goodness!) but that reservoir that you see in Wednesday’s picture…that had been replaced TWICE by Christian Brothers had at least three cracks in it. They replaced it again, and the car seems to be fine now. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Lopez Auto Repair rules!

This, of course, left me stuck in the heat again, so I went to the movies. (My favorite way to cool off.) Rock of Ages wasn’t showing at a reasonable time any more… 😦 so I went to see Ted. It was cute. I enjoyed it a lot better than I expected to. Plenty of MacFarlane in-jokes. And Giovanni Ribisi simply stole the show dancing to “I Think We’re Alone Now” on the television.

So, no cleaning again today, but we have a friend coming to Texas from California tomorrow, so I need to straighten up before he hits Austin. Luckily, he’s going to Dallas to see his folks first. 😉

Till next time.

RieView — Rock of Ages

Okay, I have been missing since February…and I have no good excuse. I have been doing better on my Here’s the Clean… blog, but even that has had a few missed days.

So, coming back to my main website, what am I talking about — a Jukebox musical. But hey, I can talk about anything I like. It’s my website. 🙂

I love Rock and Roll. I freely admit that. I went into Rock of Ages not expecting a whole lot, but thinking it would be a good way to kill a couple of hours so that I didn’t have to sit in Newell’s parking garage while I waited for him to get off work.

I freaking loved it.

I’ve heard complaints about certain aspects of the movie — the love interests are pretty, but bland…for example. Well, that is really what the ingenue and her male counterpart are classically expected to be. Go back to the classic stock characters, and they were spot on.

It really was very much a classic Commedia dell’arte structure, with Sherrie and Drew being the innamorati; Dennis and Lonny the clowns; Stacee Jaxx il Capitano to some extent; and Paul il Dottore. Whether or not this was intended or a happy accident of theater — since that is where the story originated — I don’t know, but it is fun to contemplate.

The story is very much tried and true…”Small Town Girl” comes to the  big city seeking fame and fortune. She meets “Aspiring Young Singer” who helps her out — and asks her for a date ten minutes after they meet. Hey, it’s a musical.

They work for a veteran rock groupie and his right hand man in an iconic Rock and Roll hangout on the Strip in 1987 L.A.

Throw a restless Rock legend, a sleazy manager, and an intrepid young reporter in the mix, stir in a Church Lady who leads a group called “Ladies Organization to Stop Evil Rock Singers” and her submissive husband the Mayor in to sweeten the pot, and you have a recipe for a rollicking good time.

The songs weave together beautifully, the cast can sing and dance, and it is gorgeous to look at.

I have been recommending this one right and left. If you rocked on in the 80’s, go to remember. If you weren’t there, go to discover. I’ve had the songs reverberating in my head for days now. (And Tom Cruise is hot as Stacee Jaxx.)

So today started out one way and ended up another.

I intended to get some work done on the revisions I need to do today. Instead, I wound up going with Newell so that I could get gas then take the car to a meeting I had. Which turned out to be not a real meeting after all, but it did give me an opportunity to plug Rock of Ages to my insurance agent.

Then Newell and I went to lunch, and I decided to visit my sister for the afternoon. She wasn’t home when I got there, but I hung out a bit with my nephew. On the way back to the office building, the poor car began to overheat, and when I pulled into the garage, there was smoke billowing out.

Lots of water went into the reservoir, but it was boiling away almost as fast as we added it. Made an interesting little geyser…

But I don’t think it’s supposed to do that. (Bad pic, I know. It didn’t want to fountain pretty for the camera…)

We limped it home, but it will have to go to the shop tomorrow. Hopefully it won’t be an expensive fix…

Asked Kathleen about the eggs, and she said only one of them has survived. But I did get the opportunity to plug Rock of Ages…do we see a pattern forming here?

I haven’t loved a movie this much in a very long time. Yeah, it’s a bit hokey in spots, but it is also a damn fine use of music as a medium. Love the soundtrack. A good one to sing along to.

And Tom Cruise is HOT as Stacee Jaxx.

Yes, I know…I’ve been missing for a couple of days again. I said I wouldn’t do that, and I did. *sigh*

Sunday was just so exhausting. By the time we finished in the Dealer’s Room, packed all the books back into the car and had dinner, I just couldn’t face writing a whole post…or even a paragraph. I did finish the rest of Once Upon a Time. Can’t WAIT for the new season to start. And the submissions queue is empty for the first time in months. Plus, I think I might have placed another story…so that was a good thing.

Monday, by the time I drove home, all I wanted to do was crash…and that’s pretty much all I did. I was in bed before 10.

Today, I decided to take completely off to recover. I rode in with Newell, had lunch at one of my favorite restaurants — The County Line, and then went to see Rock of Ages in IMAX. I’ve heard good and bad things about the film, but I adored it. I hope to post a full review on the RieWriter site later…maybe tomorrow.

In fact, it inspired me so much I decided to share this little story I wrote a while back. It was a self-challenge piece. Each line in the dialog is a lyric from a song. Some are more obscure than others…like the line from a song in Passionella which I did in High School. (That’s where my cleaning lady picture comes from. I sang the song that link takes you to.)

Anyway, here is the story:

Every Rose Has Its Thorn

“Hey! Don’t come around here no more!” The old man shook his balled fist at the ragged urchin in tattered tunic and patched leggings.

“Catch me if you can!” teased Connor, dancing away from the irate merchant. He tossed the apple he’d swiped into the air and caught it.

Alone again, naturally, the boy thought, sighing as he strolled down a dimly lit alleyway between two seedy tenements. He took a bite of the apple.

“Hello.” An equally bedraggled girl stepped out of the shadows, her eyes fixed hungrily on the apple. She pointed a shaking finger at the fruit. “You’ve got something I need.”

Connor frowned, taking a step backward as he cradled the stolen prize to his side. “Who are you?”

“I am my own worst enemy,” she answered with a rueful grimace.

“Won’t you tell me your name?”

“You see, I’ve already waited too long, and all my hope is through.” She made a grab for the apple and Connor sidestepped the rush. Tears welled up in her eyes. “Prospects look dismal, how can I go on?”

“A curious tale,” he murmured, sympathy swelling within him. “Our troubles are all the same.”

“You shut your mouth!” She lunged again, and Connor let her snatch the apple from his hand. She ate it as if she had not seen food in days.

“Consider yourself at home.” He smiled, draping an arm around her shoulders. “We don’t want to have no fuss.”

She looked up at him, eyes shining with tears. “Every rose has its thorn.”

Connor shrugged. “I’ve got the touch.” And he led his Rose home.

Good day all around. Great panel this morning moderated by Tanya Huff.

Got more feedback on Skellyman.

Sold some stuff. Worked on my revisions due by December. Submitted a Halloween story to Mocha Memoirs, and watched a couple of catch up episodes of Once Upon a Time. Now I is sleepy. Going to bed.

Better report tomorrow.

Night. 🙂

6/22/12

Mostly spent today setting up and sitting in the Dealer’s Room. No sales, but a lot of looking that will hopefully translate later in the weekend. I did clean some of the junk emails out of  my phone, so that is something. 🙂

Tomorrow will be a long, busy day. Going to get to bed early.

Good night. 😉

6/21/12

After driving to Houston today, I finished the slush files, so that is a major cleaning accomplishment. 🙂

Oh, and I have spent quite awhile working on my phone today, because we managed to update the operating system to Ice Cream Sandwich last night. That was a comedy of errors itself, but at least it is done.

This is another short one, but it’s late and I’m sleepy. I didn’t get to bed until almost 2 AM…

See y’all tomorrow…
