Productivity Feels Good, No?

I am currently revising one published novel and one WIP. I have another published/out-of-print novel waiting in the wings for revision. The Bruce and Roxanne collection–with new stories as well as the old–is in formatting stages. The Nearly Notorious Nun (Book Two in The Conn-Mann Chronicles) is due out at the end of the month.  Speculative Poets of Texas Volume I: S. P. O. T. –where I share the T.O.C.  with Juan Perez and Joe Lansdale, among others–is out… And that is only the book-length stuff I am working on.

Having the goal to push myself to do more has given me a tremendous boost in productivity.

I have had 9 poems, 6 short stories, and 2 flash pieces published so far this year, with many more accepted and in process. That would have been a good number of submissions for me before I started the challenges in 2013. Now, it is about two weeks worth of work.

I like being a productive writer. It’s fun. You should try it. 😉

5 Things I Hate and What I Plan to Do About Them

Obviously, I haven’t been blogging here. I said this was the last chance for this blog, so if I don’t get my act in gear, I will be closing it down at the end of the year. I really don’t want to do that, because when it is working, it really does motivate me to work on my house. So, I thought I would codify some things and see if it could jump start things again.

1) I hate that I haven’t been blogging regularly. How will I fix it? Add blogging–at least a little each day–to my list of daily chores. The dailies seem to be getting done, so if I add it to the routine, hopefully, this will get done too.

2) I hate that my house never actually gets any cleaner. How will I fix it? Well, if I am blogging daily, I will need something to talk about. So, every day I should be able to get at least one chore done. That’s my theory, at least.

3) I hate the clutter. How will I fix it? Every day I will figure out a way to give away, sell, or trash one or more items. If I include what it was in my daily blog, then it should become routine–and another daily to do. 🙂

4) I hate my disorganization.  How will I fix it? Every day, I will try to sort through something. A box, a drawer, a shelf, something. I’ll also put that in my blog.

5) I hate that I can’t even get into my office to use it. How will I fix it? Every day I will work on my office so that I can actually get into it and organize it. These trials will probably be blog posts. And may wind up as some of the things above. 🙂

One thing I have learned–if you over reach, nothing will be accomplished. I want to make this work, so I am going to stop there. This is a manifesto of sorts. I have blogged today, so I will start tomorrow on all of these steps. That’s fair…isn’t it? 😉

State of the Challenge Update

smallvanityshelf

I told myself that I would update the blog more often…so, of course I haven’t. But I have been busy. 🙂

As some of you may remember, I have an ongoing challenge this year to submit at least one piece a day. Some days, I fear it will not happen, but I have managed to pull it out of the fire so far.

Since we are now halfway through the year, here is a formal update.

203 submissions as of this morning.

87 rejections this year so far. Many of those to markets I would never have dreamed of approaching if I hadn’t needed to look so hard for markets. 😉

72 acceptances through today. Again, many of those were places I might not have approached. I’ve formed relationships with markets I love working with. I’ve found second homes for several reprints. I’ve had photographs accepted for publication. It’s been amazing.

It’s kept me extremely busy, and I really will be happy to slow down a bit next year, but it has taught me so much. To write crisp and tight. To write short and fast. To self-edit quickly. To tweak until a piece is perfect.

I highly recommend challenging yourself to a similar goal. It really helps you push to be better!

Whew! Busier than I Thought :)

I’ve been updating the pages under “My Work”, and I’ve had a lot published in the three years since I started pushing myself. More than I realized!

Currently, I don’t have a page for non-collected poems, but I really should. In this year alone, I’ve placed 28 poems, and most of them were new.

There have been a lot of short stories placed too, but the poems are special to me.

Just goes to show that determination and pushing yourself can really make a difference.  And so far this year, of my 166 submissions, 56 have been accepted. Almost as many as have been rejected (66 of those.) Best ratio ever!

And I’ve gotten a lot of editing done. 🙂

"Surrogate Sea" Blog Tour Stop

Hi, everyone! I’ve been busily churning out submissions and neglecting the blog again, but today, I bring you a special treat. As part of Danielle E. Shipley’s release tour for “Surrogate Sea,” we offer this letter she received from the South Wind…

Author,

I must admit, you have surprised me. For I have seen your mind, your spirit, and found at first glance little to impress me. Your darling Wilderhark Tales have, by and large, been sweet and straightforward – two characteristics as far from my essence as anyone could name. Vesparya-like stories, they are. La-di-da frolics of love and light adventure. Your human readers seem to enjoy that kind of drivel well enough, but I’d sooner turn the pages to soggy pulp in a monsoon than read them.

            But then, “The Surrogate Sea”.

Whatever possessed you, little scribe, to tackle such a tale of intrigue? Of subterfuge and sly deceit? That is not like you. That is like me.

Ah, but perhaps you never intended it to be so. You likely went in expecting this story to be much like any of those that came before it. A human royal in search of true love, check. A magical complication, check. Edgwyn Wyle being Edgwyn Wyle, the forest featuring in there somewhere, check and check and yawn. Continue reading

Very Sweet Music…for Alistair and Jo

DanBernardo

My friend Daniel Bernardo, who is a very talented composer, has written two variations on a theme for Alistair and Jo.  They are both simply splendid, and I am in love with both of them. I hope to create a book trailer for the series using one or both–or a third that will be slightly longer and is still in production.

But I really wanted to share them with you.

This is the first one:

and this is the second one:

Leave a comment. Which do you like better and why?

I am having so much fun collecting things Conn-Mann to bring to you!

Meet the Pirates! (Part Three)

Avast Ye Airships_Banner

Into the home stretch! (Typing on my tablet in the Dealers Room. This should be interesting…  Had to go and get the laptop when the Tablet wouldn’t cooperate. Sigh. See the things I do for you?!)

As before, Part One is here and Part Two is here.

Our final third of villainous crew begins with that scurvy knave Jim Reader…

13) Jim Reader — “Adventures of a Would-Be Gentleman of the Skies” — Jim Reader was orphaned as a child, and raised by a pack of wild corny dogs. They taught him having a stick up the bu… well, it’s a bad thing, and that the value of grease and mystery meat is incalculable. He’s previously been published in “The Ladies of Trade Town” Continue reading

Meet The Pirates! (Part One)

AvastYeAirships72dpi (1)

So…Blogging 101 didn’t work so well, because I have been so busy with the anthology. But THAT is going swimmingly. In fact, here–as a special treat–is a little bit about the Pirates themselves. For the sake of brevity, I will be posting six at a time each Friday until we meet them all.

I asked my authors to tell me why they wanted to be in the anthology. Here are their answers, and a bit about each one. 😉

In order of appearance, here are the first set of scurvy crew:

1) Stephen Blake — “Beneath the Brass” — Stephen Blake lives in Continue reading

Any Progress is Better Than NO Progress…Right?

It feels like I got little done today, but I didn’t get to cleaning until after I blogged for riewriter.com, submitted today’s submission, discussed publishing details for the anthology…so, yeah. Doesn’t look like much, but several trips up the stairs and laundry in the washer too. I am exhausted! But I’ve lost weight since the beginning of the year. 😉

Today’s project was to get the ping-pong table uncovered. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Well, no…:

DSC00004

It’s in the front hallway, and what feels like a logical place to set things down. Only, they seldom get picked up and moved along to where they go. Once it is clear, we are going to fight to keep it that way. I have vowed this to be so…in my own head, which is where it most needs to take root.

So, after several trips up and down stairs, and some sorting into places where things belonged, we have this:

DSC00005

Can you see the difference? I know I can. Now, you might be wondering about the piles of books, and why they aren’t put where they belong. I know Marvin was asking about them:

DSC00006

Well, can you see those double doors behind the table?

That’s the library.

Once the table is cleared, I can get in there and put the books away.

Yes, there is much more to do, but at least a start was made. My back and I are feeling virtuous.

UPDATE: I got a little more ambitious. You can actually see most of the tabletop now:
