I’ve been very lucky. I don’t have any family currently serving in the military, and no close friends who had to go to war. But I deeply respect the men and women who have put themselves in harm’s way for my freedoms and safety. On this Memorial Day, I thought about that off and on all day. I hope you did too.

Newell is hoping to go to work tomorrow. I don’t know if he is feeling one hundred percent, but he is in the middle of a project, and doesn’t want to lose momentum.

I really rather hope he feels up to it, because I never get anything done when he is home. Even if we only sit at our respective computers doing our own things, at least we are in the same room together. I feel bad if I go off and do something else — especially if it is something I really would rather not do anyway, like dishes. 😛

But tomorrow, I have to wash them, whether he goes to work or not. And no playing EQ2 until I do!

I am planning on using the desire to play as my incentive to put in my three hours of work early. That way I am free to do as I please the rest of the day. Doesn’t that sound like a plan?

I did get the litter boxes cleaned and my plants watered today, so the day wasn’t TOTALLY wasted. Just about 99% of it. 😉

Found a market to submit to, though, so it was a good day to me.

Talk to you guys tomorrow.

Just Can’t Wait to Get on the Road Again…

Yeah, I know, I’ve already used a Willie Nelson song, but what can I say? This totally defines my mind set at the moment. So looking forward to being able to head to the grocery store, or visit my best friend, or just go cruising after sooo long without a vehicle of my own. I dearly love my darling husband, but sharing a car for the last six months has been a trial.

Taking advantage of double experience points in EQ2 this weekend, I have been playing a lot and little else. I had missed my MMORPG.

Here is my little rogue, Tysche, recreated EQ2 style:

The one thing I really like about EQ2 that you couldn’t do in Everquest is the ability to buy and decorate a character house. This is Tysche’s Kelethin bedroom — complete with the trophies she’s won “studying” other races.

Still have a bit of nausea if I play for extended periods though, so I reached my limit for the day. Back to static Facebook or Pogo games for the rest of the night. 😉

Hell. For the first time all year I missed a day. And I should have remembered after we got home from the hospital to post it…

Let me start a bit earlier. Newell asked me to drive in with him yesterday because he had a sore throat and had slept badly, and wanted me to make sure he didn’t fall asleep. So I went to the office with him instead of driving around for the truck.

The office closed early for the holiday, and he asked me to check and see if our doctor could see him. No. They were full, so we went to the ER. He was shaking so bad from the combination of his fever and their air conditioning that he couldn’t even fill out the whole form. And his blood pressure was through the roof. They had him on IV fluids for about three hours, and took a lot of blood for tests. Then they sent us home with Amoxicillin and pain medication and he went to bed.

I’ve been sitting up playing EQ2 with a friend to take my mind off it, but I totally forgot to make a post in time. So…my bad. And I was so determined not to miss a day. *Sigh* The best laid plans…

Heading to bed now. Will update later in the day.

UPDATE ONE: SERIOUSLY wish I could sleep with the sun up. Was up before 7:30 again. At least Newell says he feels better this morning. And — drumroll please! — my truck passed inspection, so she is totally legal now! I am on the road again. SO excited to be able to get around. 🙂

Probably will be a laid-back weekend. After all, it is a holiday.

Take some time to remember why if you are in the States.

Still haven’t gotten out and driven yet. Been doing computer things. And washing clothes, so not a totally unproductive day. Still, I would like to have that inspection done. I should at least pop up to Cheddar’s. I was going to head for the Salt Lick for lunch, but it is kind of late for that now.

May be just a little day again. 🙂

UPDATE ONE: After a debate with myself, I decided not to go out to lunch at all. I may take a drive tonight to rack up some miles, but there was too much to do today to get out of the house. And I didn’t need to spend the money after all. Maybe tomorrow. Though I do need to switch the truck to the other side of the garage…

5/23/12

Been another long day that started exceptionally early. But it’s gone a bit better than yesterday.

I woke up before 7 again, but in a way it was very peaceful, as I get a lot of my rituals — email, comics, so on — checked before Newell is up. But he got up early today too, so maybe that is an added bonus. If he gets out and on the road to work early, it means he is more likely to please the boss set.

Since they told me yesterday to drive my car a lot to get it ready for inspection, I decided to go get my registration tags taken care of and head up to Georgetown, as I said yesterday. Got that done, and had first highway drive. Babe behaved beautifully. 🙂

Had a nice visit, with lunch at Mom and Dad’s. She made us 3-2-1 cakes for dessert. Do you know about these? They are the coolest. Newell loves to make one up for a snack, and it is good that he can make himself something I don’t feel obligated to share. He usually doubles the recipe and adds cinnamon, but I make mine to the specs. Our current mix is angel food/orange cake, but Mom had angel food/chocolate. The second cake mix can vary, but the first HAS to be angel food. We never wait the 15 minutes that linked page says to before eating them. If you try it, let me know what you think. They are great little treats when you just need a bite of something.

After the cake, I headed home on the toll road, so I could have a straight shot back to Austin without much chance of policemen. At least that was my theory. And it was true, but what I had forgotten was the 80 MPH speed limit on that road! I was a little hesitant to put her through quite that much of a shakedown drive, but she did fine. I didn’t get to 80 for much of the trip, but I did hit it a couple of times, and it felt smoother than the old days.

When I got home, I goofed off for a while, but I really did get something done today. I rearranged the garage to where I THINK both cars will fit into it. We’ll see when Newell gets home. That is probably it today. And tomorrow will probably be about the same. I called and asked if that was enough miles to recheck the inspection, but they didn’t think so. Tomorrow will probably require another road trip.

Darn. 😉

5/22/12

What a day it has been so far! Yikes!

First of all, allergies woke me up before 7 am. To some of you, that is late morning, but for me, it is practically before dawn.

Even the CATS weren’t up yet:

Oh, wait…that might have been last night…but it’s cute, so I’m leaving it.

I organized myself for the day, realized I didn’t have a current insurance card, and headed for my insurance company, because I knew there was an inspection garage across the street. Two birds, one stone.

Except…my insurance agent wasn’t in. Which wasn’t my biggest concern since I noticed that my check engine light was on (which meant it wouldn’t pass inspection) and the speedometer/odometer weren’t working. Great.

I got it across the street to the garage and explained everything. They had a fax machine, and someone at the insurance office (who couldn’t help my agent’s clients) said that if I called Farmers, they might be able to fax over a copy of the proof of insurance. Which, luckily, they could. So now I have two. One for the truck, and one for my purse. (She had to resend it, because it looked like it hadn’t gone through the first time…but it had.)

The lovely gentlemen at Lopez Auto Repair fixed the check engine light problem — there was a broken hose, which they replaced — and reconnected the speedometer, which…as I suspected…had been disconnected and not reattached. No more shade-tree mechanics for me!

Unfortunately, they couldn’t run the computer diagnostics until the car had been driven some more, so they couldn’t inspect it. He said if I bring it back tomorrow, he’ll try again…but I am going to run up to Jiffy Lube and see if they can do it, because it is a lot closer.

I stopped at Specs on the way home for a bottle of Sangria. It’s chilling in the fridge now. It will be my reward when this mess is over.

Heading back out into the heat. Wish me luck!

UPDATE ONE: As expected, it still didn’t pass inspection, but I did get the new wiper blades it needed to pass, and replaced a missing lug nut. The computer returned all “Not Ready” codes, as I was sure it would, but it should pass when it’s been driven enough, and at least I have the paper now that says I tried if I am stopped.

I got an oil change and new air filter while I was there, and it is running much smoother now. Someone had set my radio to KVET, and while I don’t usually do much country, it felt right driving my truck with the windows cracked (you don’t need air-conditioning to pass inspection — that fix can wait…) One of the boys working at Jiffy Lube even asked if I had ever thought of selling it. I told him not right now. Now I am thrilled she’s up and running again. Though I have to make room for two in the garage, and that may be awhile.

Today I needed to go with Newell so that I could take the car in for an oil change and do a couple of other errands. As we were getting ready to go, my mechanic called and said he’d be over to finish the truck today. Since he had the garage door opener, I just told him to go ahead and come on, but that I wouldn’t be here.

When I got home, the truck was in the driveway! Hooray! I haven’t gone further than around the block so far, since I need tags and inspection, but it is at least running…though the engine light was on, and I will need to see why before it will pass inspection…

But at least it is moving…

The other big excitement of the day was the House series finale. While I enjoyed the “Swan Song” retrospective, Newell would rather have had a two hour episode, and I can see his point. The retrospective probably wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I really liked it. The series ended in a very House-like way, and that is all I’m saying.

Short entry, and no photos, but I’ll do more tomorrow. Promise. 🙂

Said To Myself This Is Very Strange…

…and that line pretty much sums up my reaction to Dark Shadows. But I’ll get to that.

First, an update on my impatiens from yesterday. It’s looking much better:

Kathleen called early this morning to tell me she had a photo op for me, so I went and played in her backyard for a while:

Pride of Barbados                       Freshly washed leaves              Tiny pine cones

Crazy bugs…                                Magnolia Blossom                      Almost there!

The magnolias were what she called me over to see:

Fresh, pretty, and pristine.                               Like diamonds on the succulents…

The cats have been adorable lately too:

Firefly and her Daddy…                                       Luther in a box…

My camera’s been getting quite a work out.

Then we went over to Barton Creek Mall to see Dark Shadows. In a nutshell, it wasn’t what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it for the most part. I was not pleased with Johnny’s make up. It was way over the top. Aside from that, they treated the source material with much greater respect than I feared. Newell didn’t like it much at all, because he wasn’t even born when most of the original TV show aired. (Which really makes me feel old…lol.)

If I ever get caught up on my RieViews over on the other blog, I will probably do a more in-depth discussion. (But I have been having so much fun over here I have sadly neglected that site…)

After we got home, it was time for the eclipse, so I joined Kathleen and Rita and her boys and we waited for it to get visible. We had a welding helmet to look through, and it did a really good job…but I couldn’t resist trying. This was the best my poor little camera could do:

Think I am about ready for bed. Hopefully my truck will be put back together tomorrow, as I still need inspection and tags on it when he’s finally finished…

Till then. 🙂

5/19/12

Today was our monthly Mystery Readers meeting in Georgetown, and we had a special panel of guest authors and an artist who discussed the craft of writing/illustrating mysteries. It was a lot of fun. I made a new friend. 🙂

Before the meeting, I walked outside and noticed that one of my impatiens just crashed overnight…

Kathleen said it was lack of water, so I drowned it. 🙂 Not really, but I did give it a good soaking. When I got home, I think it had perked up quite a bit. I’ll check again in the morning.

But I digress. I went up a bit early and rode down to the meeting with my parents. Mother has decided she really likes the Kindle. Unfortunately, it is MY Kindle, and I am beginning to be fearful of ever getting it back…lol.

The Georgetown Library is a lovely facility. Two floors, with a nice little cafe on the first floor and a Friends of the Library second-hand bookstore on the second. Great meeting rooms too.

Library entrance                         Dave Ciambrone — author      Trish P. McCracken — artist

Dave,                                               author Joan Upton Hall,                                 Trish

Socializing before the start of the panel. Good turnout. Several guests in addition to our normal membership.

Dave poses a problem.                                          Chatting after the meeting.

It was a lot of fun. And I may have to start attending the meetings of the Sherlock Holmes Society of Austin. Trish McCracken is an avid member, and one of her paintings was used as an illustration in The Sherlock Holmes Companion: An Elementary Guide. I just ordered a copy. 🙂

After the meeting, I went back to Mom and Dad’s to get my car…since my truck is still in pieces in my garage…

Took this on the way home. Georgetown has a real deer infestation.

But they are pretty…

That about wraps it up for today. Tomorrow we are going to see Dark Shadows. Looking forward to it!

5/18/12

After a week of being good, staying home, and being responsible, I need a break. Going in with Newell today. May treat myself to Dark Shadows. Still have mixed emotions about their treatment of my childhood icon, but it is Johnny Depp…

We rearranged the bedroom last night, much to the consternation of the cats, who were very vocal in their confusion. Little by little changes are falling into place.

Look how well my peppers are doing:

UPDATE ONE: As stated in the comments, since Newell was interested in seeing Dark Shadows, I didn’t go today. But I DID get to cash in my rain check and go to The Oasis for lunch, so it was worth it.

The lake is really starting to fill up, and it was so lovely on the porch today:

My yummy chicken “Fireballs” and honey mustard to dip them in…

Yay for my wonderful man who treated me to one of my favorite restaurants. 🙂

When we got home, I was really hoping to see the truck sitting in the driveway…but it hadn’t been touched. Ah well…

Firefly wouldn’t come when called, which is unusual for her. Even after I ran outside to see if she was hurt, I couldn’t figure out why Newell said “There is a reason Fly won’t come in.”

In case you can’t see the reason either — I almost stepped on it!
