Spent a great deal of today in the parking garage, freezing my little behind off. Now, if only it had burned calories…

I needed to take the car in to get an estimate today, and it would be $2000 to replace the door at that body shop. Yikes!

I haven’t done a lot else today, though I did do a load of dishes and a load of laundry when I got home. Tomorrow will be much more intensified, as I plan to stay home and write/clean all day. 🙂

Not to let today be a complete waste, I wrote the first poem for my “Walkabout” chapbook:

First, here’s the picture that inspired it:

mushroom trail

The Drunken Fairies

I think the fey were

drunk
last night.

On cowslip wine or
moonlight…

They left behind
a weaving
line of
toadstools…
where
they should
have
formed a
ring.

Here’s another picture for you, just ’cause I love her, and it was a good Elf shot. This will be going on “Miss Priss’s” page on the main website when it goes up for Conn-Mann.

elf

Isn’t she stunning? She’s my puppy-cat. We think she is either part Maine Coon, or part Norwegian Forest Cat from her characteristics, but she was a rescue, so we don’t know for sure — and she is tiny for either of those breeds, but very compact and muscular.

That fulfills my writing for today, little though it is, it is something, and that is enough for me. 😉

Had to go downtown and pay my sales taxes today. So that was a chunk of time. But at least it is done and ON TIME this year.

Tried to fill a prescription, but it had expired two days ago, and it’s been a runaround all day to get it sorted. Still isn’t taken care of, but I tried.

So, that was a lot of my day.

Then I sat and watched last night’s Once Upon a Time as I wrote a review for NovelSpot which may or may not pass muster, since it was my first try.

And I wrote a poem which I posted on Facebook. For those who might not see it there, here you go:

The Constant Battle

Today, poetry drips from my fingertips.
Not in tidy sentences or flowery phrases,
But words which stain my keys with blood…

I struggle with the words—
Fighting for victory
One red-tinged letter at a time.

I sit at my keyboard
Hoping to imprison my opponents
On the page before me—

Locking them away in
My manuscripts to serve
A lifetime sentence.

———————————————————————————-

Perhaps not my best, but it is nice to be writing poetry consistently again. And I went for a BRIEF (cold out there!) walk around the block and got an idea for a new chapbook. In some ways, maybe my most ambitious yet.

So, it wasn’t a LOT of writing, but it was something, and I think I will amend my goal to just be write SOMETHING everyday. It will still be a major step up from going weeks without anything.

Made one of my famous (around the house) catch-all soups tonight. On a cold night, I like to grab several cans from the pantry and mix them together for a nice, hearty supper.

Tonight’s soup was as follows:

1 Can  Progresso Italian Vegetable soup

1 Can Campbell’s Broccoli Cheese soup

1 Can Creamed Corn

1 Can Diced Potatoes

1 Box of Tomato Red Roasted Pepper soup (my favorite–it’s yummy)

1 Can extra water

A handful of Vegetarian Sirloin Tips (any meat will do, I bet)

Mix everything together and microwave for about 10 minutes.

Great warm meal on a cold day. Pair with buttered toast if desired. 🙂

You Can’t Always Get What You Want…

…but if you try sometime, you just might find–you get what you need.

And I think I did with that critique that so disheartened me. Not saying I’ll make all the changes suggested, but I will make a few more. Just not right now. February. I’m making myself ignore it till then while I do other things. That’s two weeks incubation, and then I’ll fix it and send it off to the next step.

So, I’ve been writing little things, poems, a short story I’d started ages ago, and starting my next Conn-Mann book because those characters are all happy-go-lucky and silly instead of horror. 🙂

Submitted the story to Mocha Memoirs for “No-Excuses-Day.”

Got the garbage out today, and a load of dishes washed. Trying to stay at least on top of the pile. Of course, as I was making my salad for supper tonight, I shook the dressing bottle –and it went EVERYWHERE! Seems that it was put back into the fridge with a broken cap, or the cap got broken somewhere along the way without me knowing it…either way, it was a MESS — and I wound up having to finish the bottle (which was luckily almost empty) because I was NOT putting it back in the fridge that way.

Have errands to run tomorrow, but my goal is to whip the kitchen back into shape as well. Wish me luck.

Regrouped a bit today and realized that some of the criticisms I got yesterday might be valid…but some of them aren’t. I have to decide which ones mesh with my vision, and go from there. Simple thought, but not always obvious.

But not today. I am sitting on SKELLYMAN for a couple of weeks at least and starting the next Conn-Mann book. So that’s what I did today, wrote part of the first “Get a new reader caught up with the Series” chapter. It’s rough, but that’s how a first draft should be, right?

I also went to the post office and mailed back the misdated check and sent off a check for a copy of a poetry anthology. That was my closest to cleaning activity for the day, as most of the rest of it was spent watching three hours of the Face-Off marathon they ran the other day. LOVE the DvR. 🙂 This was a season I haven’t seen before, so it was really cool. As far as reality shows go, this one is pretty good in my opinion.

Allergies have been nasty this week. On the advice of my doctor yesterday, I took a Zyrtec this morning…but I was sneezing like a fiend!

That’s pretty much it for now. Have to figure out what I can do for my “No Excuses” day tomorrow…I don’t have anything I was planning on submitting anywhere…

Went to a marketing webinar yesterday that made me come away thinking I am doing everything wrong.

Got a critique back today on SKELLYMAN that makes me wonder why I am bothering to try and write horror.

Right now, feeling extremely low and vulnerable. Probably, if I had gotten that critique BEFORE the major rewrite I just finished, it might have seemed valid…but I am second-guessing myself now. 😦  She did send another email telling me to remember it is only one person’s opinion…and now that the initial reaction is settling…maybe I’ll look at it again.

NEXT month.

And I was so pleased that I had written and submitted two poems for an anthology today.

And been asked by my good friend Marc Gunn to co-write a marketing book…

Well, at least my doctor was pleased with me today. Though she said I should be drinking 60 oz. of water a day.

So, when I got home, I dug out this:

Water glass

It holds EXACTLY 60 oz. — and I drank a whole one between 3:30 and 6:00. Newell was most impressed. 🙂

Today, I went to see Les Mis. It was a good chunk out of my day…

I really liked it. Russell Crowe probably wouldn’t have been my pick for Javert either, but he didn’t bother me as much as most people. I hadn’t ever seen the play, so I didn’t really know what to expect. Hearing the soundtrack without the context doesn’t completely prepare you for the impact of the whole thing. I’d watch it again. 🙂 But not real soon.

I got home and did a pre-completion edit on a short story I”ve been working on for a long time. Edited the 3000 words already there and added about 1000 more. Not quite to goal, but I also attended a webinar on marketing this afternoon, so the day was really packed.

I put a load in the dishwasher, but I think that’s it for me tonight. Wiped out. Going to crash early, I fear. And think about how to plot the rest of that story.

Had a lovely, long celebratory lunch with my new friend Deborah today. Even though my truck wanted to misbehave in the wet weather. Better get me to the theater tomorrow!

OH! And Deborah surprised me, not only by paying for lunch to celebrate finishing the book, but buying three of my novels. Movie money for tomorrow. 😉

Then I came home and wrote a 2017 word story. Not sure if I really like any of it. But there may be something in there somewhere worth salvaging. The IMPORTANT things were:

1) I made my 2000 word goal

2) it was new material

Set up a couple of payments, washed a couple of things by hand, made dinner. That’s about it.

Still not to the balanced stage I need to be, but I am happier than I have been in a long time, and that is part of “cleaning” too.

1/8/13

Today I finished my SKELLYMAN edit. Go me! That’s two books finished in the last two weeks. Of course, neither of them was start  from scratch work, but two books! And not even two weeks into the year! How cool is that? I never work this hard? quickly? consistently? all of the above?

Whatever, it feels REALLY good. I can’t even be too upset with myself for not getting more cleaning done. I will find the balance in time.

For now, I need to find my next project. I think I will probably concentrate on short for the next few days. I would like to get some backlog of stuff for anthology submissions out of the way. And I have my play dates to consider.

But, probably next Monday or so, I will go back to the mystery I started a few years ago I think. I’ve never written a mystery to completion before. Now that I’ve written my first horror novel, I think I’m gonna try. 🙂

Big chunks of time scheduled for the next three days, but I’ll think of something to post. 😉

Till then —

1/7/13

Okay…sitting down to my second diet soda of the day for the first time all year. I’ve really been trying to cut back, but today…I earned it.

Four loads of laundry run and hung.

One load of dishes run.

And STILL managed to edit 5 chapters, at least one of which needed major rewrites.

SKELLYMAN looks on track to be finished — AGAIN — tomorrow. At which point I will send it out to a new group of beta readers, some who have read it before, some who haven’t, and see if it is ready to fly. Lord, I am ready to kick it out of the house! lol

I also managed to clear 5 episodes of Once Upon a Time (it was a marathon weekend) out of the DVR. Almost empty now. A handful of Leverage episodes — including the finale — and that is it. Of course, it is about to record Castle, but that is fine by me. 🙂

[I always include the links, just in case someone stumbling on my blog hasn’t seen a show I mention…let me know if I should stop.]

I have playdates for lunch on Wednesday and Les Mis on Thursday. It is so cool to have friends to do things with again! So far, 2013 is looking like a VERY good year…

Though I must confess, it is harder to get any cleaning done these days. I find that if I am writing, I want to be writing. If I am not writing, I look for any excuse not to sit down and do it — including housework.

But there must be a balance, and I WILL…eventually…find it. 🙂

Django <– first song of the new year!

Guess what we went to see today? 😉

Yes, there was a lot of blood in it, so if you don’t like fountains of the stuff, Django Unchained is probably not for you. However, I thought it was brilliant. I love Tarantino movies anyway, and this is definitely one of his best…though I really haven’t seen him make a bad one. LOVED it, if you can’t tell…

Anyway, that was an unexpected surprise in the middle of my day — I’d thought about suggesting it, but didn’t, and all of a sudden I got a screen capture texted to me showing that Newell had bought tickets. He’s SO good to me.

Luckily, I had already fulfilled my weekly submission quota — submitted a poem to an anthology today, as well as a proposal to do a static presentation of my Elven language for a Language Creation Conference I am going to in May.

I may not be getting much of anything done by way of cleaning yet — I’m still adjusting to being productive — but I AM being productive! I really feel like a real writer right now. 😀

Of course, I might finish quicker if I turned off Adderly…
