What I Learned About Marketing From "Orcs Must Die"

My husband asked me if I wanted to play a little “Orcs Must Die” (actually, OMD 2, but who’s counting…) I’d been working hard on the Scavenger Hunt all day, so I said sure.

Of course, I’d been working hard on the Scavenger Hunt all day, so as we played, I realized I could apply some of the things that related to the game to marketing. Continue reading

Well, if I take out all my writing news, I have little to talk about over here…until I get that balancing act figured out…

Today, for instance, I did no cleaning, because I was working on marketing all day.

And I don’t know for sure that there is total overlap, so I shouldn’t leave you guys hanging on everything that is going on. I’ll figure it out…

But I will give you back the poem of the day. Because I am just that generous. 😉

(And I have nothing else to talk about today. ;))

Rapunzel at the Pond

Her hair is the reason
my niece is called
Rapunzel…
though no witch has
invited her to share a
tower…which is to the
good.
She’s a golden child,
with the courage of a
lion,
and the requisite
curiosity that goes
along.
And sometimes she
sits and talks to
fishes,
and who is to say
they do not
answer?

The Overwhelming Freedom of Rejection

Until I figure out how to make a “Blog” page, separate from the Front page, this will have to do. I am not going to jump in to revising the site until I decide what I want. But I have something important to share with you today.

I have been regaling the readers over at Here’s The Clean with my writing exploits all year, but I decided, if I am going to try and make my “main” website a more viable face for my writing, I need to do the talking about writing over here. So, I am taking all that away from them (though hopefully, they will follow it to this site) and giving it to you! Continue reading

Yes, I have decided. I know that it may make a handful of you have to read two separate blogs…but I really need to move the writing news back to the other site. Sorry. I am hoping that it will spark interest in THAT site, and get me talking more about cleaning again over here.

I do have a surprise guest blog coming for you over here soon. I think it will be a lot of fun. I know I can’t wait to read what my guest has to say.

I will continue to post tracking info over here, but not writing news. And I think that should include the poem of the day….but I’ll let you give me input on that. What do you think?

I washed clothes and dishes today, but haven’t got the clothes out of the dryer yet, which probably means they will need a little freshening up tomorrow. Oh well, I was busy with record-keeping and acquisitions today.

Bit tired. And I have to go write another blog entry, so here is the tracking:

In honor of my rejections for the month of February (I didn’t make 30, but I did get 10, I think) I got taken out for fajitas tonight. That was cool.

Today was a day with one rejection, one acceptance (I think…) and one poem getting moved up to the second round of readings for the magazine I submitted it to. That’s the first of those I have gotten.

I also got another piece out when I got home — had to drive Newell to work today, so mostly worked on the Scavenger Hunt.

Still not 100%, so I am going to be short tonight. Since I wasn’t home, I got no cleaning done. Sorry. OH! Except for the backseat of Newell’s car…because he’s not allowed to do it himself any more. 😉

Poem, huh? Oh, okay….

Forever At Play

Forever at Play

The children reach
extended hands
for toys eternally
outside their grasp.
They freeze mid-step,
head cocked as if
to hear a comrade’s
voice.
The airplane held
beyond the reach
of all below strains
for the freedom
of the air they
cannot feel.
Forever at play,
yet eternally
unsatisfied.

There Are Gonna Be Some Changes Around Here!

Well, one of the challenges in the Scavenger Hunt is to have another contestant critique your blog. So I did.

websitecritique

At the moment, since my blog is just the homepage of my website, it was easier to critique the whole thing. And I learned a great deal from the comments. So expect the site to undergo some major facelifting and marketing enhancements over the next few weeks.

In between submissions and WRITING those submissions, which has been monopolizing my time lately. I’m standing at 51 separate submissions for the year so far…and it isn’t March until tomorrow. Look, I CAN be a real writer when I want to be. 😉

2/27/13

Though it will be posted as having gone up on the 28th, I will post anyway. I almost didn’t. It’s been a long day, and I said aloud that I might skip it…and Newell took me to task. So I am posting. 🙂

It has been a very productive day. I finished the story I started yesterday; wrote another poem for a call that closes tomorrow, and watched most of season five of Supernatural. Plus two loads of laundry and a trip to the grocery store. No wonder I am tired!

I also had another of the Scavenger Hunters, WebsiteDoctor, review my RieWriter site. Let’s just say…there’s work to be done. [if the review isn’t live yet, it will be soon.] On the other hand, I have lined up a prominent Steampunk icon to blurb my book (if he likes it) so that is a win. All these marketing nuances are making my head spin. Or maybe it’s the Death Wish

I am ready to wind down now, so I will leave you with your poem. [though perhaps I should really consider moving this writing section of the blog back to the other site where it belongs. What say YOU?]

and partners go…
some things in life abide–
And though the Bards
now solo show…
they still are side by side.

2/26/13

Spent a lot of time working on the Scavenger Hunt today, and then started writing a new Tysche story to submit to an anthology call. The deadline is Friday though, so I may not make it in time. If not, I’ll have another Tysche story to send to Mocha Memoirs. 🙂

Still not 100%, but feeling a lot better. We got out of the house and went to Kerbey Lane for dinner tonight, which was the first time Newell had been out of the house in a week, I think. Luckily yesterday’s winds had blown away all the bad weather that we had been warned about, and it was a beautiful day.

I’ve become almost obsessive about checking my emails for submission results. At this point I don’t care if it is an acceptance or a rejection, I just want to know what is going on!

That’s one reason to write more to send out, isn’t it?

Does anyone else watch Face Off? Are you as glad as I am that Autumn finally went home?

Let’s see if I can’t get you a poem tonight:

Rainy Day

Rainy Day

The rain pours down
in miniature fountains,
splashing on the sill
in a merry dance.
Its song is a rushing
symphony punctuated
by bass drum notes of
can or car.
The sweeping blades of
the windshield wipers
conduct the music as
we drive,
components to the song.

2/25/13

Today’s “cleaning” consisted mostly of retrieving the garbage can from wherever the 50 mph winds had decided to throw it. They even had the pickup bouncing on its wheels, and I saw a report that a friend had seen a semi overturned on the highway. We haven’t had any really rough weather this winter, but we may be about to get some.

Still sick around the house. I spent all my working energy today to get my author sheets completed and turned in for Conn-Mann. Tomorrow I really must try to get back to writing, but we’ve both been so miserable that not much has been accomplished.

I am definitely sick of being sick. And there is so much to do for the Scavenger Hunt. Trying to learn a bunch of new things in the midst of all this is making my head spin!

In case you want to see what I have been doing so far for the Scavenger Hunt, here is a link to my new tumblr.

It’s getting late, and I don’t want to be off a day again.

Too tired for poetry tonight. Soon I shall be back to normal. I HAVE to be!

Never Can Say Goodbye…

Since December 29th, there has been something on our DvR that we just couldn’t get around to watching. We kept putting it off, and putting it off. Well, tonight, in light of both of us being sick all weekend, we finally broke down and watched the series finale of Leverage. I have been a fan of Dean Devlin ever since Hard Copy, and I think he gave us something special in Leverage. The directing on the finale was beautiful, and that was him too. 😉  I will really miss this show, but somehow, knowing that somewhere out there Parker, Hardison, and Elliot are keeping on keeping on makes it easier to say goodbye…sort of.

So, being sick sucks. But I did get dishes washed today, for the first time all week. And the DvR is now down to last week’s Castle and tonight’s Walking Dead. Should be able to get that cleaned out tomorrow just in time for the Monday night shows. 🙂

I hoped to write another story today, because I found an interesting call that closes on the 1st, but I got caught up in working on the Scavenger Hunt when I felt like doing anything. Oh, really? What Scavenger Hunt, you ask? This one. And it’s not too late for you to come play too. Liz, might enjoy this a lot. If you guys do decide to play too, mention my name when you join, ‘kay? My player handle is riesheridanrose, and I’ll get credit if you play.

I’ve got some reading to do, so I will cut this short tonight. I hope to get back to exercising more soon. Being sick sucks! (yes, I said it again. :P)

Peacock

The peacock roosts away
from clutching fingers
on childish hands…
safe in the treetops
where his furled fan
keeps secret his
lonely heart.

OH! that last reminds me, I was the guest blogger over at Selah Janel’s blog today. Go check it out! And starting March 5th, I will have a monthly blog post over at Mocha Memoirs.
