I realize I have been ignoring you. Sorry about that on the one hand. On the other, it means that I am actually working a lot, and just can’t bring myself to blog for the heck of it…

Up to 78 submissions now. And, though I’ve gotten some rejections lately, they have been more likely to have suggestions for improvement.

And I got an acceptance to an anthology I really hoped to get into, so that was a lovely surprise. I started reading the email expecting a rejection and it wasn’t. Those are the best!

Tomorrow night is my first time vending at Beer, Brass and BS with my jewelry. I have my fingers crossed it will be a good night. I went and got a collapsible table today at Academy. It’s sort of like this one: RIO Adventure Centerfold Table — surprisingly, I couldn’t find an exact match on Amazon. Of course, I got the first one home, started to set it up, and it had a big hole punched in it. So I got to go back and replace it. Made sure to take the cardboard sleeve off it before I left the store that time!

With a panne velvet cover and my matching display pieces, it SHOULD look sharp. I’ll post pictures tomorrow or Wednesday, depending on how I feel when I get home.

Nothing much else to say tonight. Been a long day. I will whisper words of wisdom at a later date.

I realize I have been absent for a few days. This may be more and more likely. On the one hand, I am writing like a fiend (up to 78 submissions–of course, a FEW of those are reprints). On the other hand, I don’t feel like blogging at the end of the day. Perhaps I should start blogging to start my day…I’ll think about that.

I still haven’t gotten the Skellyman agent stuff together. I think I am scared of it. Hell, I KNOW I am scared of it. But I really ought to get it done. Then it will be out of my hair for awhile. Instead, I start a new short story. *sigh*

I had to go run an errand today, and ended up being a supportive shoulder. I was very glad I could listen to someone who really needed to talk.

I did get dishes washed today, and the sink scrubbed out, so I did a modicum of housework. Sent off the story I had been working on and started another.

I find that having a specific market in mind makes it easier to write a story. Now whether that means it can’t be used anywhere else is another problem for another day.

Finished watching the second season of The Killing today. There is supposed to be a third season later this  year, but I don’t see what it will cover. It’s bad enough it took them two 13 episode angst-ridden seasons to solve this one murder. Really? They’d have been kicked out of any other fake police department for ineptitude. And I’ve always wanted to visit Seattle, but does it EVER stop raining?

I’ve been very good lately. I may play hookey again tomorrow and take a day off…but no, I promised to get Skellyman queried this week. Darn.

Oh well. I do have to get out of the house for a couple of errands.

I’m rather poemed out for today, so I will give you a haiku:

20120817_103503

Elf lies between my
monitor and my keyboard,
acting like a pest!

(But she moved right before I finished…)

Skipped another day, and a Sunday at that. Just was exhausted by the end of the day yesterday. We had a birthday party in Georgetown, after staying up until 4 AM, and then I had to come home and work. Got two submissions out and watched the rest of Fear Itself. Not sure why, as there was really only one really good episode out of 13. That one, I loved. The rest were pitiful.

Today I didn’t get a whole lot done on any front. Had to go to the post office again, and then came back and wrote the beginning of a new story I hope to get finished and polished for a call with a March 31st deadline. That doesn’t sound TOO bad, but I start edits on Conn-Mann next week, which will eat into my day a bit.

Went over the proof of one story today and received contract for another. Plus one rejection that had some very useful feedback.

And then I went on a PhotoWalk through downtown Austin that took my evening. I hope you don’t mind photos instead of poetry tonight…

3/9/13

I was ready to skip tonight because I had nothing to say, but the Add a Post page came up, and I guess I’ll try.

I think the only way I will get any housework done is to just take a day off writing. Otherwise, I just sit at my computer all day looking for markets and trying to target them with a submission. It makes for a lot of writing, but a really messy house.

Today I started watching Fear Itself. I’ve watched 8 out of the 13 episodes so far and really liked 1. I would recommend “Something with Bite” highly. The rest of the episodes, not so much.

I’ve also been watching Supernatural again from the beginning so that Newell can see it, and it is really amazing how much it has improved from the beginning. As someone told me, they really hadn’t found their voice in the first season. (And they didn’t have Misha yet…)

I wrote a guest blog post on how great it is to be a writer in the current state of the industry. If she likes it, I’ll let you know when it will run. I also made two more submissions today.

I am very caffeinated at the moment. Time for some solitaire. 😉

Another poem stolen from one of my online communities tonight…this one I posted to Writer’s Cafe in 2008. (Reusing the photo too…I am a bad blogger!):

IMG_4522

Call down the moon
and we’ll ride the wind
to find the fields where
the dragons lie.
The rainbow’s end is
bathed in stardust
and the pixies dance
to the nightingale’s song.
The Milky Way
becomes our river
as our ship explores
the sapphire sky.
It’s fueled by dreams…
and the magic of a smile.

3/8/13

About to miss another day. Sorry, guys, but after I sit at my computer writing all day, it is getting harder and harder to come back to work and do a blog entry. That isn’t fair, though, so I try not to play hooky often.

I did a lot of laundry yesterday, and dishes today, but that is also pretty much my extent of cleaning these days. On the other hand, I am up to 66 submissions for the year. So far I have 14 rejections and 7 acceptances. And I think I am about ready to try some non-fiction submissions. I’ve written/finished more short stories so far this year than I have in a decade it feels like!

Other than writing, I have been watching interesting things on Netflix. I watched House of Cards, and it was a fascinating look at Washington–how true it is, I don’t know, but it made me think. And then I watched the first season of American Horror Story. I LOVED that. The characters weren’t particularly likable (kinda like Mad Men) but I was invested in what happened to them. They don’t have season two available yet on Netflix. I don’t think I liked it enough to spend money for it on Amazon…but after seeing Joseph Fiennes is one of the stars of season two…that may change. 😉

Right this moment, my brain is rather mushy. I don’t think I could do justice to a new poem. Let’s see if I can find one to share…

This is an oldie, but a goodie:

The Mirror in My Head

The mirror in my head shows
a girl of slender grace
with hair of red glinting in the sun
and eyes of green sparkling beneath
a fringe of bangs
as she stands poised before the world.

The mirror in my head shows
a thousand tomorrows
waiting to be tamed,
a thousand hearts
destined to be broken.

The mirror in my head shows
wit, and poise, and power.

The mirror in my head shows
fire, and brilliance, and freedom.

The mirror in my head shows
the creature trapped inside
the confines of my outside.

The mirror in my head breaks
when I pass
the mirror in my hallway.

3/6/13

Sorry about missing yesterday, but I really had little to say. I did no cleaning, and finished no stories, though I did start two new ones. I was just really tired, still sore, and in no mood to blog. Sometimes that happens to the best of us.

But I am back! Got two more pieces out today–one of the ones from yesterday, and another one to the place I was going to send the first one before I re-read the guidelines and the contest called specifically for science fiction and it was fantasy. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK THE GUIDELINES!

I did cook last night, and do some dishes, I think.

Today, I also signed a contract for a poem that will appear in May. I’ll talk more about that later, but I am VERY excited by it. 🙂

Does anyone Twitter besides Wyndie (I already follow her), because I am finally tweeting as @RieSheridanRose. If you let me know your handle, I’ll follow you. So far I have 29 followers and follow 111….lol.

Crazy busy, actually. As I told a friend earlier today, I have submitted 60 pieces so far this year, and that is without getting Skellyman ready–and I REALLY need to do that. Must make it a priority.

On top of the writing, I have a spot vending at Beer, Brass and BS this month, and so I am trying to get a few more “Steampunky” pieces done. Am I insane?

I’m going to quit writing for tonight and give you your poem, so I can go play a bit of Solitaire.

In honor of the season, I give you some lyrics that Marc may or may not ever make into a song:

Cabin

(Chorus)

*These taxes, they tax us —
Make them go away…
No way to relax as
the bills we can’t pay!

My father he farmed
the land of his birth,
a family connection
of freedom to earth.
His father had passed
on his love for the land —
to watch the crops grow,
to tend them by hand —
But the government tax man
has sent us his toll…
and there’s no way in hell
to keep this place whole.

My son loves the land,
he dreamt of this farm
one day being his,
tilled by his arm.
He’s a hard-working man
and brought home a bride
to build for the future
and stay by his side.
But the money’s all gone
there’s no way to pay
and tomorrow the tax man
will take it away.

My wife understands
that there’s nothing to say.
We haven’t the money
they want us to pay.
She’s packing our things —
what little we’ve got,
which after the tax man,
sure won’t be a lot.
She’s stuck by my side,
through thick and through thin.
I hope that one day
we’ll be happy again.

Don't Put All Your Marketing Eggs in One Basket

Something that I have learned from watching the world around me–particularly as it relates to my career–is that the landscape of the Publishing Business is an ever evolving one. Years ago, when being professionally published was merely a dream, I was very much aware that print was king. As for marketing, you bought ad space in a magazine or newspaper, because a television ad was far too expensive for most writers.

To some extent, these parameters still apply, but the advent of the internet age has restructured the landscape extensively.

For one thing, print media is no longer the “be all and end all.” In fact, most magazines and newspapers are struggling to survive in a physical format. Continue reading

3/4/13

In too much pain to move any more than necessary today…so I got 4 submissions off. 😛

Aside from that — trashcan in, DvR cleaned out. The Walking Dead WAS dark last night, wasn’t it?

Almost done with Season 6 of Supernatural. I made my first “fan tweet” to Misha Collins today. He’s lovely.

Got it tied down official that I had a story accepted for the Hero’s Lament anthology, and signed that contract on the new Tysche story. Plus another rejection with a nice personal comment on it, so I feel the week is starting off well.

(Maybe I will keep the stats over here and do more meaty writing blogs on the other website…)

And don’t forget, if I scheduled it right, I will be guest-blogging on the Mocha Memoirs blog tomorrow, and every 5th for at least 6 months.

So, I definitely owe you a poem tonight.

My mermaid
swims in airy seas,
untouched by brine.

She plays amid the
clouds as if they
were schools of fish.

My mermaid sits
upon the crescent moon,
combing her hair.

She sings to sailors
of a different breed,
a siren nonetheless.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite!

Today was the 85th Annual Austin Kite Festival in Zilker Park. And I was walking from about 12:30 to 5, and then went to the grocery store, which was about another hour, so I am tired and sore and don’t have a lot to say. But I will share pretty pictures. 😉

IMG_7586

Lots of People. Lots of Kites.

IMG_7466

I tried to get another shot of this one, but the wind was really pulling the kites.

IMG_7467 IMG_7474 IMG_7477

One of the coolest kites I’ve ever seen…

IMG_7480

He was just so cute.

IMG_7483 IMG_7497 IMG_7511

More air pirates!

IMG_7518

If the line hadn’t been so long–and I had any reason whatsoever to do so–this is the kite I would have bought.

IMG_7533

Dumbo flies!

IMG_7545

Good to see an old friend again…when I took pictures at the 2010 show, this kite was flying.

IMG_7563

This little devil wasn’t really…it was probably 15 feet in diameter and 50 feet long at least.

IMG_7569

This was my favorite shot of the day. It kind of embodied the whole experience.

IMG_7580

Like I said…lots of people, lots of kites.

Except for my sore feet, and getting hit in the face with a kite that took a nosedive, I had a good time. Begging off poem though. Epsom salts are calling my name…

Standing Out from the Crowd

Swan and Ducks

Today as I wandered the 85th Annual Zilker Kite Festival in Austin, Texas, I found my mind turning again to marketing and how it relates to writing. And when I saw the situation above, I realized I had found my subject for today’s post — Standing Out from the Crowd.

I don’t know about your business, but in mine, there are millions of products for sale. Literally. According to Amazon’s stats:

That’s a lot of books. (When I get cocky thinking I’ve produced or participated in a lot of books, I’ll look at those numbers and get a sense of perspective back…) Continue reading
