Counter Intelligence: Cleaning the Kitchen

Today, we are going to tackle the rest of the kitchen. It’s light duty compared to some of the work that needs to be done around here, but it’s what I feel up to today.

Allergies suck!

Plus, I have vowed to attempt leaving the Diet Dr. Pepper in the grocery store and only drinking it outside the house… Luckily, I found a tasty caffeine substitute, so no withdrawal headache this morning:

14533026257292083106325

Actually quite tasty.

First order of business, empty the trash. Then we tackle this counter:

14533028616941568878051

Okay, I emptied the dish washer first, and refilled it. Can you tell I really don’t want to tackle that counter?

For one thing, I don’t really know what to do with everything. Some of it is easy, of course — the Angry Orchard box is empty and doesn’t need to be kept…especially on the counter. Broken down and in the recycle box!

The collected potato chip  bags are for the birds. I have been saving them, but saving them without actually putting them out for the birds doesn’t do any good.

Chips crunched and spread on the back lawn. Bags put directly into the outside trashcan.

Crackers were also saved for birds, but there are enough crumbs outside now, and they expired years ago. Trash it is!

Several things left on the counter are drink mixes. The cabinet above the counter has several drink mixes, and I thought that was a good place for them at the time. Now, I am not sure, but that isn’t part of what needs to be done today. You have to set specific goals for the day, otherwise, you will keep jumping from job to job and nothing gets finished. For today, I will put the drinks with the others until I decide if I want to move them all.

I had put the tool caddy over on that counter because Newell’s pills were next to the stove. This makes it harder to cook — the few times I do that — so I think I will switch them back. Having the pills on that counter where he gets his tea ready in the morning makes some sense. And storing them neatly in a box means that they can be put away easily if we ever decide to allow people into the house again…

The cleaning makes that a dim possibility. 😉

So, here’s the finished counter:

1453308793576-725398087

And the counter beside the stove where the pills lived:

1453308992582-1788630263

Three counters down. One major counter to go. Today, I think I am done.

Till next week…keep it clean!

EDIT: Ok, after lunch, a little more energy. Decided to keep going a bit. I really did want to get all the counters cleared today.

On Newell’s suggestion, I moved his daily use teapot to the counter in place of the coffeepot I seldom use. When I need coffee, I can just pull it out of the cabinet, and put it back when I am done.

So, the last bastion of counter clutter:

14533144238181468903734

We will get to the stuff on the floor if we still have the energy.

Took the seed block I’d also bought for the birds and put it in the feeder. Now there are a lot of things on the counter that better belong in the pantry. So, off they go.

Starting to see improvement. Pause to put in a load of laundry — sometimes mulit-tasking is inevitable…

1453318933015-1242782527

I love the Angry Orchard trees — but why keep the empty bottles when a photograph will do? Bottles in the recycling bin.

Still some things to decide about the stuff left on the counter, but it looks SO much better, don’t you think? 🙂

1453322305119-1686200632

Well, not the photograph, but the tablet is heavy!

Still, the kitchen doesn’t look too bad. Except for the floor, which really needs a mop.

This time, I really am done for the day. Except for the laundry, which is ongoing…

Keep it clean!

How Much Research is Too Much Research?

Going off last week, How much research is too much research? I have a tendency to dive into the research and go off on tangents. This can be distracting and a HUGE time sink as well as fascinating and mind expanding.

Finding the balance is sometimes difficult. Especially when your setting is a time (1874) that you can’t actually remember and a place (New York City) you don’t get to visit nearly as often as you would like. Yes, there is a lot of basic information you HAVE to look up. I have many, many bookmarks.

For example:

Timeline of New York City (1850s – 1890s)

History of Ireland (1801 – 1923)

Irish Names

Harness Details

None of these are exhaustive of course. They are starting places. I ALSO have many, many books:

20160118_164346

(Okay, maybe not THAT many books, but the collection keeps growing.)

At some point though, you have to stop reading and researching and write the book. Are you ever going to get everything right? No. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to at least be true to your own world. If you choose to ignore the historical facts, have a reason for doing it — and keep it consistent from book to book if you are doing a series.

It gets to be too much research if it bogs you down so much that you can never start putting words on paper. Avoid that.

Don’t skip researching all together either. It gives verisimilitude to your work, and shows the reader that you care about the period you have chosen to honor instead of blithely disregarding history because you can. Get the major facts right — the details can be tweaked…

Making the Big Sale

Ghosts on Drugs

My first submission of the year has been accepted and paid for. It has been a really unique experience for  me, and I wanted to share it. 🙂

I saw the call for Ghosts on Drugs, and it sounded really fun. The premise is a simple one — each story must include at least one ghost on at least one drug.

I came up with a flash piece about 1400 words long that I really liked and sent it in.

The response was quick, friendly, and positive. And, in a very unique twist for me, the editor, Hy Bender, liked my story, but asked for edits BEFORE acceptance. It was intriguing.

We went back and forth three times before he sent it on to his co-editor, Will Paoletto, to look at.

Then, the waiting…luckily, not TOO long a wait. 😉

To get that email saying “We want it, where do we pay you?” was AMAZING!

I think this was the first time I’ve been paid on acceptance. 15 cents a word. Making this my biggest sale yet.

This is a great start for my goal of $5000 this year!

If you are a writer looking for a great place to submit–I highly recommend Ghosts on Drugs.

Some days are like this…

You just don’t feel up to large cleaning projects…or much of anything else. So…it is a good thing that I did a couple of extra projects last week that I can talk about today. 😉

As a continuation of the resolution to clear out the old and organize the new, I was determined to take care of the counter top in the master bathroom. Here’s what I started with:

20160106_134402[1]

For some reason, the mail-order pharmacy we use just keeps sending pills that often aren’t close to empty before the next batch comes. I don’t know why that is. But it had led to a few completely outdated bottles that I tossed. And then I organized the rest of them…on MY half of the counter, at least…

20160106_141850[1]

Managed to keep it this way over a week now. That’s impressive for me. 😉

And then there was the “make-up” drawer:

20160106_134908[1]

I last wore make-up in about 2008. So nothing in that drawer that was of that ilk was safe to use, even if I decided to start being America’s Next Top Model tomorrow.

This looks much better:

20160106_141901[1]

All the make up tossed. And the drawer put to a more practical use–first aid and the hair dryer.

Still a long way to go in organizing the house, but working hard to keep everything done so far straightened up.

Our subreddit RedditDayOf recently had a “Cleaning Tips” day, and I got some great tips. So, here are a couple that I am passing along to you. 🙂

Clean My Space is a YouTube channel with video hints and tips.

55 Must Read Cleaning Tips and Tricks is a list with links to a lot of good cleaning information.

And UFYH is a tip site with a naughty name, but a lot of good advice. They even have an app for that!

That’s it for today. Sorry to be so slim on the actual content, but at least it is something. 😉

Building a World

Mechanical Man Art

I am the first to admit that world-building is not my forte. I skim over a lot of detail. In the case of the Chronicles…I am torn.

I got an email today from one of my intrepid beta-readers (Who I am SOOO grateful for!) listing several things that are anachronistic to the 1870’s.

I do fudge things. I know that. I try not to suggest anything available that couldn’t have been extrapolated from things that existed by a genius like Alistair or have been brought into existence just a little ahead of its time.

I don’t always explain these things. Should I? I suppose I should. But how far do I go?

Phaeton’s animation is never explained. Perhaps Alistair could give us the reason why putting the…well, I don’t want to give things away.

But would JO know all the details? Would she care enough to ask, or just take it as a given? Does she understand everything going on around her, or brush it off as the way things are? This is her story, after all.

Of course, as the author, I am supposed to know more than she does. I realize this. How much of it do I need to put into the text?

Electric lights existed by 1874, they just weren’t commercially viable or actually in use.

New York (as New Amsterdam) began regulating food from push carts in 1691. So the carts Jo buys from aren’t impossible.

Yeah…Alistair needs to work on his welding. 😦

And Jo should wear blouses with her skirts.

But where do I draw the lines?

The groundwork needs to be set in the first book. How much do I actually write into the description? And how much do I let the readers fill in?

All advice welcome. I want to do this right, but I don’t want to completely destroy the rather happy-go-lucky feel of Jo’s narration. It’s a fine balance. How do I strike it?

And don’t forget to vote on the Kitten Naming contest. I’ve only had one person give their opinion so far!

What Do I Talk About Now…?

4506186883_9499e85fa7_z

The end of the insanity has left me a bit at odds. Yes, some days it was almost impossible to come up with a submission. But in the end, it always worked out, and I did it.

There were For the Love submissions, like the Haiku Universe offerings. (Great place to submit, by the way–even better place for your daily haiku fix.)

There were the “for the long haul” royalty submissions to Horrified Press.

Several flat fee submissions, like “Leaving the Tower” in Hides the Dark Tower.

My first editing foray into the world of anthologies with Avast Ye Airships!

Branching out on my songwriting with a sale to GriffinEd.

It was a great year.

But now, it is over. And I am a little at a loss for direction. It isn’t as if I don’t have many project irons in the fire… (Did you see the call for my next anthology Ghosts, Gears, and Grimoires?)

Still, I am feeling a little lost. My house is getting more organized. I actually cooked dinner the other night. I am trying to walk 30 minutes a day. But missing that extra frenzied urgency is weird…

Ah well, I am sure I will find some sort of mischief to get up to. 😉

And Now, We Freeze…

So, as promised last week, we are tackling the freezer side of the problem today. Well, actually, it was Monday that I needed to clear out the freezer to go to the grocery store, so I took some pictures and saved them for you.

Let’s get started.

24112164211_cad521e1b8_k

I actually forgot to take a shot before I started, so this is after I had finished the door.

As you can see, the freezer is a mess. Disorganized, in need of scrubbing, and full of outdated food.

I threw out everything past its expiration date…

24112165141_f86f8e9597_k

And that was only the first bag…

Once everything was cleared out, it was time to scrub things down. We went from this:

23567965243_fcbd8becc4_k

To this:

23826966799_8e3619653e_k

Yes, there is still a bit of gunk around the edges, but getting it that far wasn’t easy.

TIP: Get the gunk wet with the sponge and let it sit for a minute or so. Much easier to wipe out that way.

So, here is the final result:

23566596774_0f9ec9c0be_k

Before the grocery store, that is. Everything remaining is under the expiration date (and those dates are facing outward for easier visibility.)

I have all my “meat things” on their own shelf, so my vegetarian husband won’t accidentally grab one of them.

And there is room for the vents to work correctly.

Here is the after the grocery store pic:

1452097067790-1195679883

As you can see, still work to do in the kitchen, but the refrigerator is now clean and full of healthy food.

Here’s hoping we can keep it that way!

And Now, We Vote…

Here are the names submitted. If you don’t see yours, alas, it was a reference to something that would have been unavailable to the denizens of 1874. I do try and keep some semblance of validity to my timeline, even though there may be a few tweaks. Pop culture references from future centuries…little too far out there. 😦

So we can remember whose name we are voting on:

I must say, I am very pleased with the number and variety of names we have to choose from. Thanks to ALL who ventured suggestions. I will speak to Priss and see if we can come up with a proper thank you. 😉

I will leave the voting open until the end of the month. Remember, the person whose name is chosen for a particular kitten will receive a prize I am hoping they will be as excited by as I am, and their name in the acknowledgments of the book as well as it being the name of the kitten in future volumes.

Oh! And Jo will be appears in a new story “It’s…Complicated” in the Lightships and Sabers anthology from Wolfsinger Publications. 🙂

Ending and Beginning: The State of the Resolution Address

Those of you who read this blog regularly (Thank you!) have been following my saga of submittals for the past year. Some days, we weren’t any of us sure that I could meet my goal–but I did. Over 400 submissions for 2015. At least one a day. Those submissions ranged from haikus to a novel. Some were submitted multiple times before they found a home–I never said it would be a new submission every day–but most of them did eventually find their niche.

Total Stats:

Month Rejected Accepted Subs
Jan 11 7 33
Feb 9 3 29
Mar 20 23 39
Apr 13 11 32
May 17 15 38
Jun 20 13 31
Jul 16 18 38
Aug 20 19 37
Sep 17 9 30
Oct 13 19 34
Nov 11 16 30
Dec 14 3 32
Total 181 156 403

It took some searching to find numbers I had missed posting to the proper columns, but this now works out correctly, with 66 subs still out and not finalized carried over to the 2016 page for follow-ups in the coming week.

I don’t know if you are impressed, but I am…lol.

It was exhausting. And, though i saw an uptick in the income page, not particularly profitable. My greatest income by far came from CD royalties and editing.

This year, my husband has provided me with a new goal–$5,000 income. Steep, but I am now of the opinion that if I try hard enough, i can do anything. 🙂

I will be cutting my submission goal to one a week, so I can concentrate on writing more polished pieces of greater length for markets that stretch me as a writer. (I won’t neglect my favorites, but that is the official goal.)

I will consider taking on more freelance work, and doing more paid editing.

Plus, I am in the process of re-releasing my Conn-Mann Chronicles books, and finalizing guidelines for a new Steampunk anthology with Mocha Memoirs.

The year ahead should be exciting, and busy, but not as terrifying as trying to come up with that sub for the day. 😉

Facing the Fridge…

One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to eat healthier and smarter. I was reading in this magazine:

20151230_093423[1]

(Because I always read the Clutter Advice, even if I don’t always take it…)

And I found this guide:

20151230_093416_001

I’d never seen this information laid out so clearly before, so I decided to use it as my blueprint to tackling my fridge in advance of filling it with healthier food.

Here was what I found this morning. What a mess, right? Who could find anything in there?

20151230_091035[1]

First task, clear a space to sort:

592.jpg

Bonus! Stove top got clean. 🙂

But…turned out, I didn’t really need a sort space, because when I started checking dates, 98% of what was in the fridge went straight into the trash!

It was a disaster.

First bag full:

597

I have a habit of buying what I think is good for me and then eating out until it goes bad. Not this time!

I thought I had a winner for oldest expiration date:

599

But it turned out, I was wrong…

600

Pro Tip: Don’t give people food as a gift unless you know they will actually enjoy it.

I kept meaning to try this Mesquite Bean Jelly, but I never got around to it. So it sat in my fridge for over a decade past its USE BY date unopened. What a waste.

Finally, the refrigerator side is done!

602

Yeah. That is EVERYTHING that was still good. You can believe I will be keeping a closer eye on dates going forward.

This is criminal:

601

I was going to tackle the freezer too before a trip to the grocery store, but that plumb wore me out. I think I’ll just buy the perishables today and we’ll save the freezer for next week’s edition.

Till then, Keep it Clean!

Bonus Pic: After a trip to the grocery store. 🙂
