Straying From the Path is a collection of poems based on the beloved fairytales of childhood. Intrigued by collections like Anne Sexton's Transformations, poet Rie Sheridan wanted to give her own voice to these characters. From the pages of Grimm and Anderson come such tales as "The Wild Swans", "The Ice Queen", and "Hansel and Gretal", all painted with a new brush. The illustrations by my talented sister Donna Minshew provide stunning visual counterpoints to the messages in the poems. Come, join us for a walk through the woods of folklore--far from the beaten path.
This book is something I am very proud of. The 13 poem
collection based on classic childhood fairytales includes "Sibling
Rivalry" (Hansel and Gretal) which was originally published in Mythic
Circle, and then revised for a stint on ShadowKeep. This poem was a Top Ten
finisher in the Preditors and Editors Readers Poll.
What the reviewers say about STRAYING FROM THE PATH:
Rie, a poet and fantasy author from Austin in Texas, has been much influenced by writers like Adrienne Rich, Anne Sexton, John Ciardi, Shel Silverstein and “just about any nonsense poet”. She tries to make her work accessible to all types of readers. Her poetry is simple and uncluttered, her stanzas brief and unadorned, but Straying From the Path’s apparent lack of sophistication could well be its greatest strength....Her collection should appeal to a wide variety of people and age groups, including those who sometimes find poetry difficult to understand, and could also prove a useful aid in the classroom.
What people are saying about STRAYING FROM THE PATH:
Straying From the Path (a Baker's Dozen of Fairytale Poems), is
beautiful!!! I've always been a sucker for poetry, and I read it nonstop, but
will savor it at a more leisurely pace later. Predictably, my favorite was
"Red", with "Pea Soup" a close second, but they're all good,
even though my fairy tale vocabulary is not so extensive as yours.

Bought your wee book of poems today...quite enjoyed them.
Little different slant on some very old stories.
